Hello Y'all so I have a 3406e 1lw 14.6l with 242,819 miles that has little blowby. I don't have much blow by at idle little smoke and no drips only happens after a pull when we where coming down from Maryland to North Carolina. I've read around the forum/videos and people said it's quite normal for a old Caterpillar to have little blow by. Everything is original on the engine part just wanna be a 100% sure on this.

That’s nothing. What are you using for oil ? I switched oil brand and mine went away on my former 3406 5EK. Switched to Guardol 15-40. Then I found a local oil distributor who carried their own house blend which was even better and exceeded all specs.

That's good to know we did a oil change and coolant change recently, currently using Delvac 15W-40 for all of our trucks

Delvac is the oil my mbn drinks like a drunken sailor, I switched up to Lucas synthetic and oil use besides a leak is non existent

Delvac is allegedly what CAT rebrands for their oil. I know they smell the same after a change. I know right but they do. I used to run Rotella in everything. Several years ago went to Delvac in my CATS, we been pretty happy with it.

I agree all that engine needs is ran

While I'm at it, does moisture or heat cause the engine to exit small drips of water out the blowby tube. I'm most certainly it's caused by moisture still in the engine... since the guy I brought it from had it sit for a year I've been noticing it today.

That ain’t moisture…..I can promise you that. My bet is liner o rings are just starting to leak from liner walk or heat. Taste it it will be sweet. Minute amounts of antifreeze manifest as blowby. A bright light shined up tube will confirm color.

@wore out Little curious on my blowby now, ever since getting the truck in late September blowby was low now it looks a little more normal then usually then I expected, comes out the oil fill cap only when removed and stops coming from breather tube? Not sure if it’s liner o-rings giving out normal stem smells like oil. It drips a little more than usually.

Look up the tube with the motor off, or pull a valve cover I’ll bet you find sludge. Either way it’s time to do something about it
