Driver asked me today, they feel that their career would be better, more enjoyable and that they themselves would be more willing to drive more miles or stay out longer If they were able to just work with dealership instead of deal with large companies or carriers.
I asked them how do you see that working out.
They said they:
I asked what’s the main problem with carriers & companies?
- They have a verifiable CDL license
- Verifiable work experience X years plus that dealership would require
- Can operate the equipment or test out at the dealership.
- Get state authority & insurance partner through the dealership
- the USDOT/FMCSA can easily find the carriers through dealerships & truck dealers agreement protected between the driver & dealership rather than companies playing around
- Deal with the dealership in terms of maintenance, trade ins, resell/buyout, buy new/expand etc.
- Rather just deal with less people and deal with the right people than be annoyed by some dispatcher or fleet manager never drove a truck in their life.
They said rather work from the load boards, self dispatch and be fully responsible, then deal with toxic culture carriers, supervisors & upper management.
I wasn’t really sure why what they were asking for doesn’t exist.. I mean logically it seems simple or less stressful.. but is there really primary a reason why that doesn’t exist? Is it dealerships just want bulk orders and one off trucks purchases is to cumbersome?
obviously it is possible, but the driver was wondering why is it not common? or why is there way to many middleman. Third party lenders, loan companies and list goes on and on.
Dealerships: “can drivers work with dealership instead?”

Yeah, I honestly think there needs to be a requirement where drivers need US citizen born here not a U.S. citizenship bought here, a high school diploma, in order to have a CDL.
Some of these drivers out here, crazy. Just like the USDOT officers passing foreigners on road test for kickback money, have a CDL welcome to America. -
Dave’s not home manRideandrepair and Diesel Dave Thank this.

Why do these drivers you talk to think it’s so hard to work with a dealership to buy a truck? If you have a down payment and decent credit, or better yet your own financing source, anyone can walk into the dealership and buy a truck. Then the “drivers” you talk to can pay for their insurance and file for their own authority and be off running spot freight from the load boards so that they can be happier and running more miles.
Rideandrepair, gentleroger, Arctic_fox and 1 other person Thank this.
