What’s happening is drivers are just stuck in these leases & dealer agreements… they’re buying a truck, working under carriers/brokers who manipulate weekly/monthly production or drivers are stuck in spot market rates can’t find a contract or it seems like no way out always sitting… the market fluctuates not seeing the money that they thought they were going to see… a basic flat tire cost sets them back…
Then there’s a driver who wants their own truck, they go to the dealership and for whatever reason they don’t have enough taxable income, they have good credit, they can’t get financing need a co-signer or partner.. list goes on and on for why they somehow can’t get a truck… even mentioned something about how the dealership said that there’s no trucks and inventory, They would have to do a factory order and it could take months.
And then none of them (drivers) wanna go back to being a w2 company driver or hate working for carriers/companies.
I understand most of them or where they’re coming from.. you have to start somewhere and then overtime let it all work itself out.. down payment at the dealership, insured, roll off the lot, grab a trailer and do whatever as an owner/op. I guess it’s just harder these days than it used to be.. drivers are just stuck in a box with wheels, rolling around, making deliveries. these drivers are just not happy with the numbers or the terms.. perhaps Covid messed it all up.. because cost was so high people were seeing higher numbers then, but they didn’t realize that during Covid operational cost per mile was nearly like two dollars at one point.
so the one driver I was talking to for the 25 minutes was literally saying he wants to be like a pilot instead of a driver but a still a driver… he wants to just show up to the terminal/dealership hop in whatever truck of choice, pick off the load board, drive around make deliveries for couple months, park the truck back at the terminal/dealership and then just go on vacation for couple weeks and repeat that all the time. His thought concept is like why don’t I just work for the dealership and pay them directly, cut out the middleman and just pick from the load board.
I said to him “you know you could just rent a truck from my Penske/Ryder and then do exactly what you’re saying” his response was they’re thieves and bunch of scam artist, and he rather just pay the dealerships/manufacture.
So he rather pay freightliner Daimler AG than pay Ryder/Penske & Freightliner/Daimler AG all four direct by mile or percentage, make deliveries get paid from customers and that’s it. Basically in his mind no need for Ryder/Penske or brokers etc.
Driver also went on to say that he’ll get a day cab do OTR runs and just sleep in a hotel instead & write it off
Dealerships: “can drivers work with dealership instead?”

So this “driver” basically wants someone else to assume all the risk of truck ownership but allow him to play owner operator when it’s convenient for them?
The manufacturers already have rental and leasing arms of their business. So this “driver” already has the means to do what he wants. I suspect what they really want though is to lower their requirements, thus making it easier for them to qualify for a loan or qualify to rent or lease from a dealer. It’s typical that instead of looking into the real reason why someone won’t finance them they want the qualifications to change for them.Rideandrepair, cke, gokiddogo and 2 others Thank this. -
What he was telling me, was a Ryder and Penske business model and he didn’t want to go to let’s say lone Mountain or he didn’t want to take out a loan through finance institution or bank, but the dealership wouldn’t let him buy a truck. So I said is your credit shot? and he said no it’s right around 700. I asked how much experience do you have maybe OTR for insurance and he said five years experience, clean MVR/PSP etc. Basically he doesn’t want to pay like $200,000 for a new truck is my assumption. But he also wants to be able to walk away from it and return it back to the dealership so they could resell it or do whatever they want and then whenever he wants to drive again he just wants to go back to the dealership and do it again. #America
basically It’s like someone else said I think the comment post prior… said the driver doesn’t want to burden the heavy cost or the responsibility Of ownership
he just wants to drive it around like a scooter, hit a profit number and then return it or even just leave it wherever with a dealership.
This is the new generation of drivers coming in. This is what they want. 25-30 year old new CDL driver probably been to Washington state once in the summer no snow, or never stuck in Florida or hours between loads, probably hasn’t even done a Amazon forced 10hr break detention then Amazon releases and says have a safe trip direct delivery. -

yes, and then times that by the whole entire new generation of drivers coming.. the spoiled entitled generation

Seriously, some of the stupidest things I keep hearing are things like this.
Drivers work for people, they are called owners or companies, they do not have trucks or find the loads unless that it part of their "J O B".Rideandrepair, Diesel Dave and Last Call Thank this. -
It's a Punjabi thing, meant to ward of the evil eye. Kinda like a lucky rabbits foot or a St Christopher medal - not really religious but also not devoid of religious significance.Rideandrepair, Diesel Dave and JolliRoger Thank this.

Kind of like one of those Indian dream weavers? Bought one in Amarillo from a gal who made them, yes she was a native American, but what she failed to tell me is that you gotta make sure they're in a spot where the rising sun can send it's rays thru it to burn off the bad dreams! Man, I had nightmares every night after I got that thing, never had nightmares before that, even sleeping right close to graveyards never had nightmares! I got rid of it, then months later my sister told me about having it face the sun....duhhhh, which way did they go? DuhhhhhRideandrepair Thanks this.
