This was going to be my response.
I have a 22 Volvo & I can't get over 11,000 on the steers with a 44,000 lb load. Done slid the 5th wheel all over the place. It moves 100 lb per hole. I never seen anything like it.
I've always used a rule of thumb of 1000 lb per hole. This one.. 100 lb per hole.
I finally just pushed it back to where it was & roll with it.
80% of my loads are less than 25,000 so no biggie with me @ 10,500 on the steers.
Probably less than 15% are 35,000.
I bet I haven't hauled north of 40,000 10 times with this truck. I just dont worry about it in my scenario. I'm not saying you or anyone else shouldn't worry about it, but, I'm just sayin' I don't. I'm just saying my Volvo is screwy too.
Over weight on steers

I speced it personally out. The fifth is slid as far back as possibleBean Jr. Thanks this.
-
My only concern is rolling empty over a scale and the man in the box has something to say about it
-
I just scaled bobtail. I’m still sitting at 12400 on the steers with only 9440 on my drives.

What is the front axle rated for?
Oxbow Thanks this. -
I know you stated the fifth wheel is ‘slid back as far as possible’, but is the fifth wheel mounted as far back on the truck frame as possible? With the fifth wheel slid all the way rearward, is the fifth wheel directly over the rear rear axle, between the axles? Behind the rear rear axle?Grumppy Thanks this.

Get some better rated front tires. I run the 16 ply Michelins only on my Volvos. When I'm over 44k I sit at around 13400 on the front axle which is within spec for those tires, they're like 7150 per.
I'm very rarely that heavy and it hasn't been a problem at a scale. Also, I have a heavy deer basher and heavy tool boxes.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Front axle says 12500
-
What is your axle spec at? Mine is 12500. If I upgrade the tires will I be “legal” even if the axle isn’t?
-
It’s between the axles and I just gave it a tug it won’t go any further
