I would say that you're half right and I'm half right. Would you agree?

Where did the name Mercedes come from?

    scroll down to Mercedes Jellikek

you can research Jellinek and his work at Benz. Bunch of useless information unless you’re a fan of history and automotive stuff. I’m a little interested mostly because of the Hometown relation with the business.

Notice how those are semi-controlled environments (ports, shipper/receiver, etc). Sure, there’s folks out there working on making the things go up and down the highways, but has anyone stopped to think of the now billions of dollars thrown at this situation to arguably not be any closer than they were a decade ago? Even Aurora is going to charge per mile for use of their autonomous system for highway use. Makes me laugh to hear “cost reduction” when the same people are turning around to charge the exact same way drivers are paid. It hilarious, actually.

Now, that aside, I agree that in the march of technological progress that these things will eventually be running freight on the roads. And if it pushes out the flip flops and imported drivers, I’m all for it. I highly doubt any of those calibers will be a threat to specialized work, same as automation. Even so, the reality of automation in trucking will be a much more drawn out campaign than anyone wants to admit. Otherwise they’ll lose their VC money. They also won’t tell anyone all the infrastructure support they need (and direly so).

And I’ve been saying for 15+ years, what’s coming hotter and faster is alternative power. Whether that be battery electric, fuel cell, nat gas, etc. It doesn’t have the glitz and glamour that automation does, but the EPA rules are already here and coming. These are the changes that are rapidly approaching that we very much will see and deal with.

Most people in this industry today will be either retired or in the ground by the time automation really gets a foothold. The imported drivers can take up the slack until then.

I think RE Olds made the first Horseless Carriage in the USA. 1903 maybe? Henry Ford studied the practices of the Union Stockyards slaughter house. Applied it to manufacturing. Ford was a true Genius. The Rouge plant is amazing. Rouge river runs through it, producing the energy. Used energy is recaptured for heating. Greenfield Village Museum is well worth a visit. Next only to Smithsonian IMO. So much history in the area. I’m currently sitting at Lear Industries. Former site of Hudson Motorcar. My Grandmother worked there for 13 years till they went under. The stories she had about starting in the paint department. How dirty a job it was. She even built airplanes during WW2. One big thing that’s overlooked is how the US made the Tanks, Planes, Jeeps, Motorcycles, ammunition to supply the Allies. That’s how “WE” won the war.

Hopefully alot more, still over capacity, gonna be really over capacity if the economy slows down any more, which it's going to. Then we are all pretty screwed
