Hey truckers!,
Hope everyone is having a great April!
I don't mean to be rude as I am new on here.
Getting ready to go OTR and for the life of me I can't figure one thing.....
If someone does go 1099,
2 questions
How the heck at even 80¢/mile,
3k miles a week, is this a good driving job?
It's pathetic. IMHO. After taxes and health insurance, a person would only be making around 50¢/mile if that.....
Is my math wrong here or am I missing something??
By starting an LLC, does this benefit you as a 1099 enough to offset the ridiculous pay?? I doubt it, just had to ask
One more thing, I am dumbfounded that anyone would work for that terrible pay if my calculations are correct.
Look forward to hearing feedback

Your calculations are right. It's actually worse off than working your worst reputable company. A 1099 works only for true independent contractors. That said, I think that style of trucking job has a place in the industry. I went that route for a few years to rehab my career. If done the right way, it'll get a driver's career back on track if he's had a hiccup. It ain't meant to be a career, but only a temporary stop gap.
Lonesome, blairandgretchen and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
#### thanks for the reply,
I have to say your right about fixing someone's CDL, I get it.
But these huge companies that only use contractors are an atrocitie.
It causing unsafe driving, etc. etc, etc....
but anyways that's for a new thread!!
Cheers and thanks for the verification.
Now to find a good company......Numb Thanks this. -

Does your girlfriend have a cdl?
If not she'll have to attend a FMCSA registered cdl school. That's the new law now.

I'll become a trainer that is approved by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security
From what I understand I can qualify for this
Any thoughts? -
1099 isn’t for everyone. You need to know what you can deduct. How much money to pay yourself and how much to leave in the company. If your calculations came out to .50cpm after taxes than it’s pretty obvious that you should go with w2 and listen to what Uncle Sam and irs tells you.TurkeyCreekJackJohnson and Coolcrazydan71 Thank this.

I really don’t see any math? Looks to me you’re just pulling numbers out of the air.1099 you are paying all your ss tax where w2 the employer pays half that’s the only difference pay wise.Health insurance would depend on several factors like does your spouse work and have health insurance that you can get on .Some employers don’t pay much of the health insurance and it’s expensive for you and some do.But you’re not going to find a w2 job paying.80 a mile either.
