Let me "stir the pot" a little more. Now those who claim that if you are compensated, you must log it. I beg to disagree 100%. I sat for 4 days and nights in a blizzard, got paid for every hour. Did the Federal Regulations require me to log the 96 hrs "on duty"? NO!!!!! Broke down, got sent to a motel while truck was being repaired, 31 hrs paid but logged "off duty". Do you log "on duty" when you are paid vacation?/ LOL We could go on and on, but the answer will always be the same, just because you are paid, doesn't mean you have to log it.

We will rescue a driver who has run out of drive time every so often.
It happens as delays are inevitable.
I've run out of drive time from 40 to 4 miles from my plant. The company does NOT violate.
I go on duty and call dispatch, they send next guy starting in the company's pickup truck to my location.
I log out my truck, on duty.
He jumps in and logs on.
I follow till he hits the fuel island at which point he logs out of the truck and goes about his tour, logging into another rig.
I post trip on duty and finish my paperwork till I clock out.
I have not violated HOS regs and everyone is satisfied with the scenario.Crude Truckin', 88 Alpha, LtlAnonymous and 3 others Thank this. -
Dennixx, what if your 14 is also up? How would they handle that?
-
He just posted what they do, the 14 hour rule only limits drive time. You can be on duty performing work related functions for unlimited hours beyond 14 hours you just can't drive a cmv past that point.
Crude Truckin', 88 Alpha, Hatt91 and 2 others Thank this. -
At my company, we do what @Dennixx does. Go on duty until you are back at the terminal and punched out. If you're on call, you take 10 hours off and right back to it. If you have a bid, enjoy your day off or start later tomorrow if you want.
You can be on duty after 14. You just can't drive.
Also...why would I want to log anything I do at work as off duty? Lol
And someone mentioned a blizzard...if you have a sleeper berth or other lodging, you can log anything off duty you want and the company can pay you whatever they want. That's up to you guys. But if you're in a day cab, you have to stay on duty until someone rescues you after the blizzard is done.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
If you don't exceed it you can be on duty past 14 as was said, you just need to clear 10 off to get a fresh clockCrude Truckin', Hatt91 and LtlAnonymous Thank this. -
I thought the 16-hour exemption was only if you returned home daily and could only be applied once a week. How are you able to stay On Duty past 14 hours and not be in violation?
-
Your clocks only count against driving time. As long as you arent driving a CMV your clocks are meaningless. -

wore out Thanks this.
