We ran [they still do I'm retired] LTL in NJ, NY [mostly NYC and long island] with a selection and I know you can't afford a roster of units but consider the possibilities:
(2) 33000: tandem trucks with 108" wide bodies tandems with lift gates
(2) 35' trailer [ex. HD newspaper units] one single axle and one tandem with lift gates
(1) 45' tandem trailer with lift gate
(1) 53' tandem with lift gate
Suplemented with 3 or 4 16' non cdl with lift gates permenent lease for overflow.
There is a lot of equipment out there better suited to LTL without dealing with two units and a converter dolly.
All our trailers had E-track and usually had a pallet jack and sometimes a helper so mixed loads were not an issue.
Splitting the units and making separate pickups isn't necessary, why add more tires, etc. to maintain and generally make life more miserable?
Running a 45 ft liftgate localish LTL dosen't do load boards so do you really need pups?
