I have a 1998 Intl 9400. About 3 weeks ago i noticed a vibration that goes through the whole truck. It starts about 55-60 mph. While driving it’s constant but will go away for about 1 minute or when you hit a bump. I just had the truck aligned, new output bearing on the transmission, and some other things. I have Toyo street tires with centramatic balancers, and cheap Chinese Kapsen drive tires. I’m trying to figure out what it could be. I’m thinking tires.

A steer axle that is towed out will lead to a vibration that comes then disappears as you increase your speed. I've heard starts at 45-55 mph then goes away 5-10 mph faster. It will be worse the more the kingpins are worn. I went thru this 10 years ago. Another factor with my truck was a slightly twisted frame. You know a frame us twisted when the cab looks like it is leaning one direction. You can put a level across the frame rails and the put it along the bottom of the cab to be more sure. Worn kingpins and a twisted frame apparently was sone of the cause for my truck. I personally do my own alignments and know the tow in was correct. It wasn't until I replaced the kingpins that the vibration went away. BTW, a steer axle needs to be towed in 1/16" when sitting on the ground after pulling forward. On an alignment rack, a little more because the wheels "relax" on the plate the tires rest on as they can turn.

If you have air suspension, check the height. Adjust accordingly to specs.

Check the slip through driveshaft also, try pushing it up and pulling it down for excessive play. The teflon on the splines will wear if it’s not lube.(Sometimes they get missed).

I learned that lesson they wear weird and inconsistent. Next set I’m gonna invest in and get a set of centromatics.

I grease the whole rig every 7-8k about every 3 weeks and purge the u joints. It ended up being the output bearing took it to a shop and they did synchros and the bearing but no race. I didn’t learn that until 5,000 miles later and the tranny went out. Turns out the mechanic wanted to leave early that day and didn’t replace the race. Cost me 4,500 in tow, hotel, parts and labor.

Never should have accepted the repair, ALWAYS install a new race with a new bearing!
