I recently received my CDL and I am looking for a good company for new grads that I can start with ASAP. I have been looking at several companies, such as Werner, but the bad press has me a little nervous. Can anyone recommend a good trucking company near GA that would be a good starter company? Also can you give any suggestions on what to look for at a company?

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I have delivered and loaded in your neck of the woods. Might look at maverick. They are a good co and take students. Might also look at mcelroy. Both are good for hometime.
smokeyman Thanks this. -
I would look into Roehl, FFE, TMC, and Crete Carrier Corp.

You could go to https://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov, the SafeStat site, and do a "Carrier Search". Refine the search by state, county, city. There are several hundreds carriers in Gwinnett county alone (many, many are too small probably to take on trainees....but you never know). SAIA is there, for one.
This might be a non-traditional way of looking for carriers but it just might give you some options. Good luck!!
(P.S. If you try this route and have trouble refining your search, PM me. I'd be glad to walk you through it.) -
try millis , prime maybe there r alot some good some bad but what u r going t have to learn is trucking is what you make of it a company that treated one guy bad maybe good for you

Something else you should know that is VERY important.
Do not pay too much attention to the horror stories you read on line. I followed up with more than ten people on line who's phone numbers I got. When I called them NOT ONE of them had really been "##%$ed" by the company like they said. Some had a fender bender and it was policy to let them go. Some had been late getting back to the trainer.
Some had whined about taking loads into NYC and then refused to take a load when they did not get home like they thought they should have.
Many were not cut out for the business and could not take it...then they whined about being in debt to the company.
If you are just starting out, do not try to get rich your first year. Keep your stuff straight, do not flunk a piss test, no booze in the truck, no girls in the truck, be neat and on time...do not fight with your dispatcher, drive careful and listen to the trainer.
One thing about Werner for all the crap you hear. They have APU's and that means a nice warm or cool truck without fuel penalty out of your pocket. You will not have trouble, with a year or two good reference from them, getting work ANYWHERE at a very good rate.
For every driver out there who does a good job, there are ten liars who trash the companies and blame their own mistakes on the corporation.
There are many companies out there that people whine about without ever having any personal experience at all.
"Oh Werner...oh GOD I would never work for those ########." Really? Why not? "Cause I read on the net in a truckers forum that they _______ and _______ and _______."
Werner is in business to make money, but keep one thing in mind. They will not short your pay and for the most part, they run safe gear, not junk.
Do not let some guys BS on the internet stop you. If you like the policies there and the fringe benfits they offer, go for it.
Find whichever starter outfit fits your needs best and keep your head into the job...focus...and do it. If it is for you, it will work out fine.
I know three guys who love Werner.
One for 3 years and two more who went in more than 10 years ago.
Roehl is a great outfit for a new guy some schools use thier training material. That's how good it is.
They will REALLY train you right, but put up with ZERO nonsense.
Same with McElroy. (McElroy will not admit it, but they will not hire females...never have, never will.)
Think about it though, you are taking 150k worth of gear and you are a newbie. If you owned that truck, would you play babysitter or dump the losers and deadweight, making your company safe and profitable??
I think some of them are too mellow actually.Sacred Feline, Vic1031, smokeyman and 1 other person Thank this. -
Great post and I totally agree with you...
...as for hiring females, McElroy is not the only company - not that any would admit it as you say...I think it is even worse now with this economy IMO.
