My truck has been sitting for four years; I've been busy.

I'm about ready to crank it up again and I was wondering. Does diesel go bad like gasoline?

Should I discard the diesel that is in the tanks? OR Should I remove it and put in some fresh?

Also, should I replace the fuel filter before I start the engine; I don't know how much use it got before I bought the truck.

The engine is a CAT 3406b.

Thank you again for your assistance.

    austinmike and Oxbow Thank this.

Personally if it looked clean I'd just spin on new filters and send it.

Throw some ATF in it. Run it.

I’ve fired up many old trucks with who knows how old diesel. Most probably older then me. Lol. If it doesnt have algae or asphalt in it. Run it. If it clogs filters then trash it.

Just taste it, if you make a sad face then fire it up. If a happy face from all the other things in it then don't. Follow me on X ( formally Twitter ) for more advice, your welcome.

Mechanical engine won’t care as long as it’s filtered . New filters with some conditioners to absorb any potential moisture and you should be good to go . Your main issue will be dried seals I’d do short drives at first before I went on a long ones to keep a eye on leaks.

    Thank you!

By short do you mean 20 minutes?

Or two hours? I actually plan to move the truck down to my home soon.

So, I just checked the fuel tank and it has quite a bit of brown sludge on the bottom. The sludge clogged my siphon bulb while trying to get a sample (pics below).

There are about 25 gallons of diesel between the two tanks.

I don't want to beak down because of a clogged fuel filter. The towing bills around here are about $7000. And, then there is one company in the area that charges $27,000 to $61,000 NC drivers question ‘astronomical’ tow bills They are located out of Statesville, NC; I won't deal with them, but sometimes highway patrol calls them because they are next on the list.
