I did this a few years ago and worked well.
Sure don't want to crawl around on the trailer for the next year.
I suspect that the oil softens the wood over time and ends in early board failure.

Interesting.
Turns the wood black, I assume?ElmerFudpucker Thanks this. -
We do ours on a Friday and let it sit in the sun all weekend. Then if need be take some dry sand or oil dry and sweep it around. Go buy the cheapest mop you can find and mix the oil and fuel in a 5 gallon bucket, we tried a cheap harbor freight pump sprayer but the mop is a lot faster.Left Lane Wayne, Feedman, ElmerFudpucker and 6 others Thank this.

I oil the boards. Old motor oil, atf, hydraulic oil. Doesn’t hurt to thin the motor oil with a little diesel fuel. ATF is thin enough on its own. Apply about once a year. This will help with rot and also it keeps them from becoming dry and brittle. And a good welder can fix that.

Yes a 5 gallon bucket and a mop is the best way to apply. Sometimes it will take two coats to really get it good. And like 50wt said let it soak and bake for a couple days

Neighbor around the mountain from where I grew up used his old oil on his outbuildings. Still standing with no look of rot like most you see….Left Lane Wayne, cke and TurkeyCreekJackJohnson Thank this. -
User tip...if you spread old oil on your deck make double sure it isn't dripping any on the ground before you drive across a state scale. One of our competitors found that out the hard way and the fines almost put him out of business.
Gatordude, Oxbow, Landincoldfire and 4 others Thank this.
