ODFL Interview Expectations

From what I've heard through the grapevine OD is on a hiring freeze. But then again, I've seen them with job postings recently. Not sure what's going on with the crappy job market.

OD is a good place to work from what I've heard but be prepared, LTL isn't an easy way to make it out of CDL school. You're not going to have food service level difficult stops but you're going to be facing a trial by fire. Especially if you're somewhere that gets snow. OD also has a management heavy corporate approach that isn't found in many other sectors of trucking.

It's good money, P&D sucks in my opinion depending on how big of a city you're in and what the locals are like. Linehaul is living the dream if you can stand the boredom. Dock work ####ing sucks donkey dick. Some OD terminals do this weird mixed worker thing. They have a term for it, can't remember what it was. My former coworker got on at OD and they put him in that position. He's on call any day of the week he has hours and gets called in with maybe 5-10 minutes more notice than it takes to drive into work. Could be P&D, dock, line, whatever. I hear the linehaul guys are the same there as my company, a buncha spoiled cry babies who rat on anyone to try and get them fired for job security. OD ranks everyone on everything as well. The break rooms there are lined wall to wall with how fast each dock worker was compared to each other, idle time, yard times, stops per hour, linehaul runs etc. the pictures I saw made the break room look like a judgement competition room. I know my buddy got his balls busted by the manager there for having a scraggly beard and wearing blue jeans.

If you can deal with the corporate ######## you'll make good money, be "home everyday," and work your ### off. It's a trade off like anything else. I think my guy did like 3 interviews to get hired on there. Once with the terminal manager, another with a panel of 3-4 office people, then another driving test and final interview. Think it took him about 2 months from first callback to first work day.

I don't know if OD does like my LTL company does and sends you out to in need terminals. That's how I'm raking in insane money with low seniority. I get per diem and a hotel and fly to some city and run linehaul. If it's close enough I'll linehaul there in a truck. If that's an option at OD you'll make more money than you know what to do with. My take home pay right now is often over 2500/week. I'd never have time at home anyways being "local" so #### it I say. Let me stay in a hotel for the vast majority of the year and play the role of nomad.

I've been at OD 11 years and what you just described is nothing like my experience here. It's by far the most laid back easiest job I've ever had. I've been driving 27yrs and I wish I'd started here from day one.

I have a interview with Old Dominion Freight Lines tomorrow for a P&D driver, im a recent CDL grad I have all my endorsements as well being able to drive a 10 speed manual if needed, job says they would want at least a yr experience but would take someone out of school anyone know if I could have a good chance of getting the job? LTL work is something I would prefer to get into early if I have the chance to right out of school.

I'm at the 2nd largest terminal in the country and we have hired plenty of guys straight out of school for P&D. If they are willing to interview you knowing you don't have much experience then you've got a good chance to get the job. They wouldn't be wasting their time with the interview if they weren't interested in you. I got my son on here at 18yrs old and he went through our dock to driver program when he turned 21. He's been a P&D driver from day one out of the class. He loves it here and has been a driver now for 5yrs. I'm a linehaul driver myself because I'm to old and lazy to do P&D! Seems like it depends on what terminal you're at and how management runs things.

Update: did my interview with the TM there, went good I feel, wants me to do a road test Monday with a driver trainer & if that goes good he said he’ll set me up with the background check & all that.

Did my road test for ODFL with the driver trainer, he said I did a good job just need to get better at shifting which obviously I will get better at with time, TM said he still has some more interviews to do, wondering what my chances are of being hired.

Hopefully you're good if you did the road test. Did they give you a dot card?
