I could see that only breaking at the wrong time/place from something that happened a week before. Shear bolts are like that.

Seems to me like this would not be necessary if the truck was properly spec'ed and properly driven.

 

I would imagine a good driver would never have need of these in all but the most extreme of circumstances. More extreme than 95% of drivers should ever see.

 

We had them on a few bed trucks that came out of Canada when we were moving rigs. They worked but would shear if we were working heavy loads in deep mud. We usually ran them until they broke and then got rid of them. They probably have their place but we never liked them much.
