IMG_3013.jpeg IMG_2517.jpeg IMG_2514.jpeg IMG_2566.jpeg IMG_2515.jpeg I found some pics from a few weeks ago. That hopper is an 86 model one of my Dads that survived the sale years ago. I keep it around for that and harvest stuff definitely not the one I’m pulling.

@wore out explain to me a little if you would about cow hauling. I’ve been trucking for 21 years and that’s one sector of the industry I’ve never learned much about, had a buddy do it for a while but he was a hero in his own mind so I don’t know how his stories actually stack up to real life. I live in Florida so obviously right now cows going out is hot and heavy, why is that? Is it to get them out of the heat? Is there truth in the stories told that if you load cows in Okeechobee headed for west Texas, there’s no stopping until you get there? Fascinating life you guys lead, I know for a fact I ain’t cut out for it though, that’s a lot of hard riding, I’d get tired for sure!

All these late model come latelys think they are the geeatest. Ain’t got since enough to realize Ochachobee to Texas in a late model high horse Pete abd a 70’s transtar with a shiney 290 no power steering no A/C fixing your own flats on bias ply rubber is a whole different deal. My Dad once said hell boy anyone can knock a 100 on 11R24.5’s get done on 10.00 20’s then crow.

Cattle is a time a year. It’s cheaper to haul the cattle to the feed than feed to cattle. So in fall last years calves will start shipping regardless of price cause another calf is fittin hit the ground. You want em up and sorta sturdy before winter. Course you always have a calf worse night of the year.
Most are fed out out west, from 300 to around 500 550 they bring the most money per pound some gonna be weined others you gotta wein they are stockers. You gotta get they belly ready for feed or it’s bad times. 650 up are feeders fats are ready for slaughter. So they’ll go from farm to sale barn, to a starter yard or out on grass or wheat then leave there to feed lot. It’s crazy how much they get shuffled. Then you got culls which are cows and bulls that have issues and it’s best to butcher em then loose out. Loading them is most times in the dark middle of night 2-3 picks 1 drop by yourself.

you’ll have replacement cattle both beef and dairy criss crossing the country some.

I won’t say you can’t stop….most think it’s a race with no regard to what they’re hauling. They think they get to suck the first turd outta the buyers ### for being first. True while they on the trailer they are without feed water getting sick and loosing weight and since it’s all done by pound on the buying end you need to hustle. Rest pens don’t really stop the shrink and you don’t know what’s been in them before. Plus they ain’t many of em. That said some #### you better rest or you’re in the hole. Wet cows need to be milked so you better have a plan even if it’s Motor’N. However most times just before daylight if you in bad shape you better take 2. That gives heat time to dissipate off the trailer. Late is better than a road side round up. They drive like #### shake you around make you swap lanes so it’s not all ridin and guide in but it ain’t rocket science. I was hauled around FT Benning Ga in cattle cars summer of 91. I can tell you it takes a lot of energy to stand. Sometimes it’s better to give ‘em a break or two hr at a time on a 1000 plus mile ride. Some don’t I’m not usually first but my loss rate is better than most. I won’t lie it gets in your blood and you don’t want do anything else. Just like pulling a motor wagon or a bucket. Some days it breaks your heart literally, you loose a Holstein steer that’s a by product at 5 days old going from Pa to Hereford. Or you have a calf born on trailer and don’t catch it gets stepped on etc. even an old mama cow you realize you can’t do nothin for her so she gotta suffer it out. Sure they meeting their end that don’t mean you gotta be rough on em. However if they ask for a fight well lol. Getting them as quick as possible in good shape is key. Sometimes only to have a packing plant leave them on ya 12 hours in the sun parked by a walk with no wind. That pisses ya off. They really ain’t a straight answer to your question in these run on sentence of a reply. I know I left out some key points that I wanted to include. Like anything it’s all in what you do. Makes us no more special or better than the next. Every time I quit I get a sick at my stomach feeling every pot I see idk why.

All these guys wanna scream oh my truck was a cow truck like that makes it something. I’d like to set that record 100 percent straight. For years cow haulers just hoped to make it in some ol heap 1 stack cab over and Hobbs pot or a center door American. Then they discovered the way to a fast truck was buy one off a chicken hauler outta Bama, the Carolinas etc. looks was secondary and a by product. They gotta be dependable cause when they put an action it sux. By far the best truck we ever owned come from Eddie Manghone (I can’t remember how he spelled it) from Bronx Ny. One helluva dude. The 2nd is my black flat top. Come from John Goodsell Muscle Shoals Alabama. Both were specced new to pull a motor wagon. Pulling a cattle pot won’t make one a cow truck. They either want it or not. Seen many a single stack FLD’s run right with the best day and night.

It used to be an invite only deal sorta. It’s sure changed that said still nothing in this world like it to me

Appreciate the response, I’d say pulling an end dump has its own draw to it as well, once it’s in your blood it’s hard to kick it, I’ve been doing it a lot of years and I could probably make more consistent money pulling a box, I just can’t see swinging doors though, there’s a nervous excitement every time that front axle leaves the ground, ain’t too many of us out here cut out for it day in and day out, especially some of the places I go and what I haul, I’d love a concrete pad every time I send this thing north, just not my reality though :)
