I drive a 2020 model Coronado with 250K miles. The front axle on this truck clangs with an obvious metal to metal sound at every small crack in the highway it seems. I’ve spoken to some other drivers and one mentioned newer freightliner models front axles now have nylon bushings rather than the old brass bushings for kingpins?
Truck seems to steer and handle fine. Tire wear is normal. Just this nagging noise sounds like a dam circus on a Saturday night! Help?

Nylon bushings have been around in some king pin models since the 1960’s. So nothing new. Not normally noisy either. A clanging sound like you describe may be a loose shock mount or the upper skirt of the shock itself rattling on the lower body of shock. Sometimes the rods are bent a little and cause the shock to slightly rotate as it goes in and out. May see witness marks in the paint even thou it can’t be moved by hand and seems tight.

I had a Cascadia that made an awful banging sound. I was sure a shock was totally shot. It was a truck that is just a spare, and I thought it might fall apart. Turned out it was just the inner plastic fender loose under the hood. Sounded totally metallic.

I bet the noise is a front cab mount, or hood saddle/bushing

Thanks SmallPack I’ve searched and searched for suspension and shock issues and have found nothing but I’ll keep this in mind.

Interesting! Big Road, 1. Although I think this noise has been there since the truck was new, the hood did come loose or something about a year ago causing it to slide back into the firewall and had to be readjusted. So I’ll ask my mechanic to check those hood bushings again. I also have a HERD hood guard on the front of this truck so that thing is subject to rattling around up there too. Thanks for your reply
