Double Trailers; Heavier Trailer before Lighter Trailer 23 CFR

Well I tried to fire up the ole Google machine and look it up, and the only thing I found was another user said something similar in 2017.

And yessir I ran into what you were saying when I did LTL. A lot of those bills are just guesses and when you run it over the scale it can be vastly different than what is manifested.

I can assure you Fedex is by the book when it comes to placards. We receive the hazardous placard instructions with the manifests and are provided with all necessary placards to meet DOT requirements. We also have placard stickers for displaying bulk packaging. We have to make the stickers up placing the UN numbers on them.

I've had times where I had three different placards on my trailer and I had to be aware of how the placards changed as I unloaded each hazmat shipment. Hazmat can be quite confusing and in depth especially with repsect to hazardous classes, bulk vs non bulk etc. We train on it every year.

Here's an example of a bulk shipment plus a non bulk corrosive, plus two other table 2 that meet the dangerous requirement I had.

Yeah, it's by the book, and it does make sense, just a different gestalt that takes some getting used to. My old safety department's policy was "more than 1,000 lbs total of hazmat placards are required for each class on the trailer, more than 8,000 lbs of any type gets a separate placard with the UN number on it", which makes sense in the TL world where there isn't a lot of hazmat class mixing. It makes no sense in the LTL world, and I'll make the adjustment, it's just weird.

Yeah there's one on I-24 west just outside of Nashville when you start going up that big hill with 3 lanes. Can't remember the exact milemarker somewhere between the 34 and the 38. Haven't seen him in a few weeks but in the spring almost every trip thru there he was munching on the weeds next to the shoulder lol. I remember 10 or 15 years ago coming out of the gorge in NC somewhere either before you got to TN or maybe in TN (Can't remember exactly) there was 2 or 3 goats that lived on the shoulder there for years lol.

As I understand it, the 8800 lbs or so requirement means an ID placard is required for that particular product, IF that particular shipment is all the same UN number and it’s the only thing on the truck.

I had a situation once where my last delivery that day was 9000 lbs of wet cell batteries, obviously corrosive for sulfuric acid, UN 2794. It was the only hazmat I had that day, so before I left I put the ID placards on then so I wouldn’t have to change them later. They weren’t yet required, but otherwise still legal.

Left Friday night from Humboldt after my run and drove down to Pensacola in a rental car to pick up the wife at the airport Saturday morning. Spent all weekend house hunting and getting the vibe of Fairhope/Daphne Alabama. We’ve settled on Fairhope. Dropped the wife off at the airport Monday morning and drove back to Humboldt. Did one Olive Branch turn and was back at Humboldt at 10pm. The fellow I trained is now doing the double Memphis turn. I’m doing a local drop and hook, then a drop and hook in Newbern going to Olive Branch then back to Humboldt. I start at 2:30pm and am finished at 9:30pm. Just like the double Memphis I was doing for 6 weeks, this run has me done and parked within my first 8 hours, except I’m not running overnight.

    JohnBoy,

I think you'll like Fairhope a lot. The wife and I have travelled there in the 5th wheel and it seems like a fairly nice town to be in. Of course you'll be close to Gulf Shores, Robertsdale, etc. Good luck on your future there.

Had the pleasure of running a Linehaul run from Olive Branch down to New Orleans yesterday. I got back to Humboldt Wednesday about 10pm and called it a night. Got up yesterday, grabbed a shower then called in to find out what I was doing. Was told they needed help in Olive and to bobtail there. Get to Olive in the pouring rain, get my assignment, hook a loaded 53’ and check the weather app. The storm was sitting over central MS and covered from there up to Northern Tn. I ran out of the rain south of Jackson MS. The farther south I drove down 55, the more standing water was on the ground as well as the power being out. I started to cross Lake Pontchartrain and noticed all the exits were closed off. The one truckstop I passed had trucks stranded with water up to their windshields. I got off my exit onto Airline Blvd and tiptoed to the Hub. For whatever reason, there was no flooding there but the power was out. I got to the hub in the pitch dark, dropped the trailer, couldn’t find anyone or a 53’ empty for my return trip and said screw it and went to bed. Woke up this morning, washed up in the truck, made a pot of coffee, gave the yard jockey a cup, then he brought me an empty and I hooked up and left. Coming back out at daylight and I could see first hand all the flooding. Once north of I-10, all the power was back on. Sitting in Olive Branch now. Hooking a set of doubles in the morning going back to Humboldt.

I noticed something today on my pay voucher. Since I started here on January 2nd, I have worked 2 holidays, Memorial Day and Labor Day. I noticed an extra $150 on my check. I called my contractor asking what that was for. He told me he pays holiday pay if you work on a holiday. So I went back and looked and sure enough, I got the bonus for those 2 days. Nice jester on his part and just one of those little things that puts a smile on my face.
