The old 6 point head CAT head bolts we reused unless they were pitted. The 12 point bolts with the step under the head I don’t. I’ve never broke one but when pulling the torque wrench you can feel something isn’t right. Way to much effort to get a click. Pull that one out put a new on in same hole and it torques without all the effort. The C12 were torque to yield but from memory it seems like the book says you can reuse the C15 head bolts. May be fine but like I said the difference in new fans reused in way they torque leads me to spend more dollars and sleep better
Doing 1 hole or a head gasket even pulling the jugs to counter bore and reuse I’ll reuse the old style. The object here is cost effective labor is a killer anyway. If we’re doing a complete motor or high end in frame it’s getting new. You’ve already spent a lot of money what’s a little more.

Another interesting aspect is the impact dropping a CAT bolt has on it. We spent a day in failure analysis on that alone. I’ve done it plenty but it gives ya heebie jeebies surely that video is posted somewhere I’ll see if I can find it

This is all the parts that came off the Mercedes. Hardly any parts. No over head crane to lift a head.

Who says mechanics can’t install windows……..?
Tech spent 1/2 day torching out the connecting rod to get it to bar over enough to access the torque converter bolts to separate the trans.jamespmack, Flint1, dirthaller and 9 others Thank this. -
