I’m new to the CDL world and I’m considering walk away leases since I leave the country for about 4 months per year being that I’m retired. Leasing gives me the freedom to go home when I please and I like the idea of turning in the truck if I need to take time off for months at a time.
Which companies can any of y’all recommend that’ll accept a new CDL grad?

so, you're saying you want to lease for 8 months per year and come back 4 months later and repeat?
cuzzin it Thanks this. -
Yes. Or possibly a longer period. Depends on what I have going onNumb Thanks this.

I'm sure that other will chime in. But short answer is DONT.....Numb Thanks this.

You don't turn the truck in. You have to cover the payments. If you walk away from a lease your done with that company.
Starting a business is not a part time job. It's full time plus. In a few years after you've established yourself, have cash in reserve, know your customer base, then you may be in a position to back off and give yourself more time.
Right now if you try to do what you want, you'll just be burning through your retirement income to support a failing trucking business.cuzzin it Thanks this. -
Bad idea!

I’ve seen that other folks have been successful with doing this and turning in the truck after completing the lease is part of the deal. I knew of a man who was driving for years doing something similar except he was doing 6 months a year. Now he’s back in Poland. When I asked him how he does this he said there’s plenty of trucking companies out there. One company that comes to mind is RE Garrsion out of Cullman Al. They’ll allow you to lease a truck for x amount of time, return it, and then take 6 months off.Last edited: Oct 27, 2024
