Also, I am wondering how you got 20 amps, as a previous poster said the inverter can use about 16 amps. That would mean the alarms would have gone off almost instantly and the inverter would have shut down, correct? I also mentioned that when I tried my 1000W, the computer ran fine until I played a game. And even then, the power draw wasn't enough to burn it out. The mini inverter just kept crashing and booting as fast as if someone was clicking the switch on and off. Since the 1000W didn't just blow up, wouldn't that mean the acceptable range of power draw would be somewhere between 1000W-2000W, especially since my laptop is the only thing I ever have plugged into my inverter?

    Deezl Smoke Thanks this.

I agree with Ridgeline, it's not the inverter.
Do you have a home depot or lowes close by on on route? Or amazon has them too. There's a meter that is just as handy as a multi-meter to have in your bunk box. It's called a kilowatt meter. You just plug it into you outlet (inverter) and then plug the item you wish to know the power draw of into the front of it. Then you can see for absolute certain the draw of your laptop and/or any other device you want to plug into the inverter. Then there's no question what the draw is, you have fact.
    Here's one at harbor freight.

Okay, say for the sake of argument that it isn't the inverter, and perhaps it's my PS. Would buying a different one be a solution? And if so, do I want one that's smaller and has a higher output? There is a compatible charger with a max output of 19.5V, 16.92A, and 330W. Again, I don't know what I would be aiming for. I just know my company will not allow me to use any other type of inverter, and I doubt they have any with higher wattage they are willing to install.

You would be surlrised, i ran a regular pc on a clipped sine inverter and if truck was on, the power supply worked but buzzed, but later when i used that power supply in my house on real 110 if i started heavier graphics card use the pc would just shut down. Not quite the same for my laptop, truck on, the power box overheated like a sonofathing but then on reg 110 or just pulling from inverter the charge was very slow.

Your problem with the power supply now should be testable by running it off 110 outlet in a house and seeing if it works fine while truck is on through your inverter, under no circumstances should you try to power it from an inverter plugged to 12v ciggarette plug, those max out at 300 watts and get extremely hot doing so.

You want same or slightly lower (5%) output, never larger, your laptop will REALLY not like having more power pumped into it than it is supposed to recieve.

Don't buy anything more till you know what you are pulling from the inverter. It worked 6 months ago, so the chain of components seems fine. Now you need to use inexpensive tools to find the problem component before spending a bunch more money replacing components that are not bad.

I would not have to pay for anything, really. The truck is owned by the company, so anything that breaks down is paid for by them. I did have to pay for the original inverter, however, the purchase came with the company lifetime guarantee that if something happens to it, they will replace it with no charge to me. I also get to take the one I'm using with me if/when I leave.

There have been a few times when I was put up in a motel by the company while serious repairs had to be done on the truck that required taking it to the dealership. During those times, as well as very hot days in the summer when I was forced to keep the truck idling so that the AC would run (I'll be ###### if I'm going to sweat in 80+ degrees for anyone) the the PS worked without any problems for both the motel outlets and the inverter

Little note: I had to move the truck, so right before I turned it on, I turned on the inverter. Both the truck and inverter have been off since 2300 central time last night. As soon as I flipped the inverters switch it started to beep. There was nothing plugged into it when I did. I also checked the voltmeter when I turned on the engine. It started at 12.7V and gradually rose to 14.1V in about 15 seconds. Usually its at 14.2 V, but I don't believe that's a huge difference, right?

Voltage readings truck on (ie alternator on) with power being drawn will cause vatiations 14.0-14.6 are usually within the margin of error/with power being drawn.

If key on truck off you had 12.7 its clearly an inverter to your computer issue, not the batteries or truck, that doesnt mean youre in the clear but helps diagnosis a little
