Is that the best as well as the only route? Sure looks like it.

FWIW, when I first drove up in CA, there WAS no road to Labrador City! I believe it's still 300 miles of gravel, even today. But, yeah, your only real choice is to get to the Trans-Canada, then keep driving a long, LOOONG ways. FWIW, there is a Canada-specific forum, and there are quite a few Canadians there with a lot more experience in those parts than I have.
BTW, get ready for some really heavy winter weather on that route! I'd describe most of that Quebec to the upper great lakes route as sub-polar. And winter has started!!Rambo S. and buzzarddriver Thank this. -
Yep, that is pretty much the way to go. I always looped north from Ottawa over to Sudbury to avoid the southern ontario/GTA area but eventually you have to take hwy 11 over the top of the lakes.
Unless you run stateside your options are limited, and even then there are only a few viable routes that make sense.
