OK, so I realize I may be completely nuts, I'm retired now but still have the itch.
Looking at a really nice GMC General with a locked up 8V92. Knowing the downsides of that old 2 stroke, (oil leaker, fuel mileage, parts, finding a mechanic) I think I might be better swapping to a 60 series.
I'm guessing the biggest issue will be the electronics. Everything else is just parts.
Please don't try to convince me to stick with the 2 stroke just for the cool factor.
Thanks.

Don't know what kind of trouble it would be to swap, but series60 is definitely a up grade. I've driven 238 6-71 ,318 8V71 ,8V82 and I don't remember thinking any of the 2 strokes were cool. Nostalgic, but far from cool. They were the most efficient way to turn diesel fuel to noise.broke down plumber, Feedman, Oxbow and 3 others Thank this.

You mean you didn’t get a chance to drive the 12V71 ? I have driven all you mentioned plus the 12V71. Back in the day when I drove for an O/O, he was a fanatic with those JimmiesBean Jr., broke down plumber, Feedman and 4 others Thank this.

I've driven all those too, the 12v71 was in a Euclid end dump. I remember being told to slam my finger in the door first thing in the morning because they run better if you drive 'em like you're mad at 'em!

Not at all familiar with 60 series Detroit’s, are they an in-line 6? Would there be room if replacing V Detroits?

You would also probably need to fit an air to air up front as well if the 2 stroke didn't use one. Might require some modifications to the radiator to fit the piping. Or might be easier to find a complete cooling package from another truck that's similar in size and make it fit in there somehow.
Electronic side of things shouldn't be too difficult to hook up. More or less just a matter of connecting the powers, grounds and inputs/outputs to the ECM from the truck.
May need to modify clutch linkage, shift linkage and driveshafts as well depending on how everything lines up once the engine and transmission are bolted into the truck.MACK E-6, broke down plumber, Hammer166 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Definately right about fitting a charge air cooler, electronics wise you would need a wiring loom off something that had a Series 60 for the cabin as you need the warning lights, cruise, ecm plug and throttle harness as well as the electronic throttle. Engine inlet pipes and exhaust are pretty simple,

The 8v92 locked up core could be sold to the "Bus Grease Monkey"(youtube) for parts.broke down plumber and Feedman Thank this.

the 60 series is 58 inches long and the 8v92 is 49 inches longBean Jr. and broke down plumber Thank this.

I don't remember, could you get an inline 6 in the General? Finding room for those extra inches and the air-to-air could get really expensivebroke down plumber and Feedman Thank this.
