I drove back in the day a 1979 General with a 350 BC1 Come apart.
broke down plumber, Feedman and Hammer166 Thank this. -
Maybe the Cummins is a better choice, plus no electronics if I go a little older.broke down plumber and Feedman Thank this.

Can't say I ever drove a buzzing duzzen. Been passed by a few back in the day.Oxbow, broke down plumber and Diesel Dave Thank this.

I personally would put a silver 92 in it. But I reckon you didn’t ask me. As to your question. Anything is possible with enough time and money. It will take a considerable amount of both.
Oxbow, broke down plumber, Feedman and 2 others Thank this. -
Another obstacle I keep coming back to is the interface between the OEM side of the ECM and the whatever is going to be used in the way of instrumentation in the cab dash. Converting from full mechanical to full electronic gauges and such, being functional and it looking nice.
broke down plumber Thanks this. -
Original mechanical gauges can still be used. Only need to change over to an electric tach. Back 30 something years ago there was an electric to mechanical cable conversion box made by someone. I think Teledyne. It wired into electronic series 50’s and 60’s and the original tach cable could still be used. Back then many mechanical 2 strokes were getting series 60 re powers.

I had a GMC General that originally had an 8v92 and they converted it over to a Cummins big cam.
You'd have to do more research, but I think they had a different cab configuration that was for the cummins, for the longer engine.
The one that was in mine was a slanted engine.
On the truck that I had it poked a hole on the corner of the dog house.
From what I remember it looked like it had to be slanted because on my truck anyway it wouldn't fit sitting straight up into that dog house.
Size wise, the series 60 is much smaller and would fit better, but you have to take care of the wiring issues.
When you swap engines that don't belong, having the wrong fan setup can cause problems. I'm not sure how you would modify the series 60 if that was a problem.
The big cam fan will line right up though.broke down plumber, Hammer166 and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
10/4 on the slanted engine. I just recalled, the 1979 General I drove had the slanted Cummins BC 1 in it.broke down plumber, Dino soar, Feedman and 1 other person Thank this.

I've driven a lot of older iron, but y'all are reminding me how thankful I am that I've never had the displeasure of having to work a General or an Astro!
broke down plumber, Diesel Dave and Feedman Thank this.
