My first truck was a single axle Astro with the 6V, I don't recall if it was a 71 or 92, 1978 model year, Aero Mayflower Van Lines.

Slants arn’t too bad to work on. The General with tilt hood should be easier then this one.Dino soar, broke down plumber and Hammer166 Thank this. -
Actually I really liked my GMC General. When you get in that truck it's like you're the King of the Road.
And you are unique because there are not that many around.
The problem wasn't the truck itself the problem was getting parts. Some parts were hard to get.
On top of that GMC had a different size frame, so you really couldn't easily weld a cut off onto it.
But it definitely was a very very cool truck that had a very cool nostalgic big truck feel to it.Feedman, AModelCat and broke down plumber Thank this. -
From reading , rebuilding the 2smoke seems easier maybe even cheaper .

I drove a Astro my Dad owned. 1973 model I think it was. Had a 318 8V71 noise maker in it with a 13 sd. Only trouble I ever had with it was the AC never worked good. Fairly simple truck to work on . Of course we never did anything like a engine swap either.Feedman, Dino soar, Diesel Dave and 1 other person Thank this.

I’ve only seen two General’s in these parts my whole life that I can remember. One is still being run as a straight tandem dump truck and the other was in a south San Antonio salvage yard that has long been cleared out for development. That one was picked so clean there wasn’t much of value left. No drivetrain left but it had the old Neway style spring ride like Utility trailers used. I figured most of it’s parts probably went to old Mex.
We had tons of Brigadier’s down here because of the Yellow fleet. They got repurposed into other lines of work, but You don’t see them much anymore either.Feedman, Dino soar and broke down plumber Thank this. -
They were a dime a dozen here.
Feedman Thanks this. -
Probably. Might even go to a 6v92. I don't think I would work this truck, more for show, maybe make a motorhome out of it.

Mine had the actual original first generation GMC air ride that was actually made by GMC truck.
The truck did ride nicely, but just the way that suspension was made compared to a late model air ride was really like looking at a colossal dinosaur.
I have the original parts book and repair book in very good condition.
It's very cool because you can see in there they offered the very very beginnings of anti-lock brakes and other interesting features for the time.
The five-star general was really a high class truckers truck.
If that's the case I would definitely work over that 8v92 or get another one.
That's really kind of a unique thing and if the truck is set up to take that engine it might be best overall.
You know there's a guy near here that has one in a tri-axle dump truck. I watch him he really pulls the hills well and it's not nearly as loud as I would have thought it would be.Last edited: Dec 30, 2024

Are you saying a series 60 is longer than both a BC Cummins and 3406?
