Possible that they don’t want to educate thieves or they couldn’t get the information.

With all of the constant problems they have, i don't see how Carvana is still in business.

    Read the article thoroughly.
    The VIN number was incorrect.
The owner took his (supposedly 2021 model year) Maserati in for service.
The problem is that the VIN number was linked to a 2017 model year vehicle of the same type!

I saw that part but it doesn't really clarify. Was it a case of the VIN being incorrectly recorded on sales paperwork? Were the VINs on the car scratched off and restamped?

Kind of hard to do your due diligence on a purchase if they aren't being upfront with what to look for.

More than likely they tried to alter the VIN plate on the dash and/or body frame and put the fake VIN on top of it,which is probably what led to the discrepancy.
Auto manufacturers stamp the VIN numbers and sticker them in so many different places to deter discrepancies like this.
Years ago (2001 to be exact) I had a brand new Kia Rio sedan (my first brand new car) and Kia went thru the trouble of stamping the VIN number on the firewall in the engine compartment,in the trunk and on top of all that stamped the chassis underneath the passenger side front seat-the VIN was covered with a plastic cover under the front seat,as well as putting the VIN in the dashboard and on stickers in the door jamb.
If customers look at just the VIN plate on the dash (if they even do that) and don’t look at the stickers showing the same matching VIN it’s very easy to overlook the other discrepancies.

Yours truly wasn’t always a truck driver. I used to wash, detail and sell cars for a living.;)

If the seller isn’t being upfront, then that’s a sign to walk away!
(If it’s too good to be true,it probably is).

Same issue when a man bought an expensive SUV for his wife. Took it to the dealership for service before giving it to his wife. The mechanic looked at the VIN kinda in a secret place on the frame and discovered it didn't match the title the man had. The car was 4 or 5 years older than the title date.
Idiot girl at Carvana said "We can't refund your money unless you return the car." He said, "The police impounded it, so how can I return it." She said, "Well then you have a problem." Anyway, he went to the top in the company and it was resolved quickly.
