    Seems a bit excessive

It's intentional, two of the best truck stops out there, they really hate the truck drivers.

Site Profile - Travel America-UCGPE24601 - EPA OSC Response

How much did this cost the taxpayer in actual clean up costs? What about less tangible costs to the community?

Now think about the impact if that location didn't have an emergency action plan and they didn't get the booms in place for another 2 hours?

Just before Christmas a pipeline in central Wisconsin had a leak. The initial report stated 2 barrels of oil were spilled. After the EPA showed up on site, the company revised it's estimate to more than 1,600 barrels. This is the same company that didn't report a spill back in 2019 for more than a year, and then had to resubmit the report after the EPA pointed out "errors of material fact". If I recall correctly, the fine for the leak was significantly less than the cost of the spilled product.

Rough math says the fine is less than the net fuel profit for 6 months. I'd guess closer to 3 months, but that's speculation. So not excessive in a dollar form.

And how many conversations did the EPA have with them before levying a fine? This seems like one of those situations where a person doesn't want to feed the parking meter, gets a ticket, doesn't pay the ticket, gets his registration suspended then punches the cop who pulled him over for the suspended registration. You really have to mess up to get on the EPA's naughty list.

    A) The EPA isn't picking on Iowa 80 because it's a good truck stop, they're picking on them because they didn't follow the law.

    B) Iowa 80 isn't a good truck stop. It's a TA with a lot of parking and a truck mall.

Trainees always wanted to stop. I always said "you can stop once you're in you're own truck and spend as much time/money as you want. Our fuel stop is/was 30 miles from here, that is/was our stop".

I park there a lot. Out to the east as far from the building as possible so I can let my dog run off leash in the huge grass field to the north.

It used to have a good restaurant back in the day, I'm probably thinking early to mid 80's . Now I stop across the street Mama's place or something like that. I would like to stop and go to the truck museum someday.
