It was a mistake to tell him to head back to Florida for a face to face discussion. When you said that he knew the jig was up if he brought the truck back, you would be in control of his destiny. He wanted to prove that he was craftier than you even though you are his boss. He resented you all along. It's a good thing he didn't come back. He could have murdered you. Not long ago I was reading a SoCal alumni story about a graduate that got murdered by an employee in Florida. Another guy in my class got shot in the head by a jealous underling in L.A., brains blown out all over the parking lot, so it happens.
A better approach would have been to use trickery that allowed you or one of your minions to fly out and stun him with a truck seizure. Show up with the police and some cardboard boxes . What he can't carry in the Uber on the way to the Greyhound station can be shipped to him.

It is a terrible situation that you have. Maybe I am old school, but if I was in your situation I think I would be putting all my efforts into tracking him down, since it seems like he will be the key to resolving this situation. The truck and trailer would come later.

But never let your driver accept cash.
Whatever it cost to have the money wired directly to you, whatever it takes, figure a way your driver does not handle ANY of it.
NEVER let your employee handle the money.
Those kinds of situations the driver is looking at you thinking you're making a fortune.
He's collecting your money and looking at how he can steal it off of you and get away with it.
And unfortunately, in this case it wasn't just however much that was, it was your truck and trailer too.
Wow.
I don't even want to ask you how much of that money is gone.
That's really a shame because I certainly think that would be considered theft, and if he was in your home state it would be much easier to go after him and find him and the whole thing.
Then you have the authorities locating and contacting him regarding the theft, and then you could pursue the other part of that.
This thread should be pinned for anybody that wants to buy a truck to put on at Landstar and put a driver in it or anywhere else...brian991219 and Long FLD Thank this. -
Police aren’t going to do anything for you at this point. If you still have a loan on the equipment I’d get in touch with your lender..maybe they have the means to go after the insurance company. -
