in 87 I took a gig driving a theater company on a 9 month tour. Alot of performing arts center theatres along with many of the old hemp houses. The tour director who hired me asked about my experience etc. telling me that most of the stops would very tight, would have to use ramps and were not designed for semi trucks.
I simply stated that if a trailer can physically fit that I could put it there. That I may need to goal 10 times but I could do it no problem. Got the gig and it did prove challenging, but set me up for 7 years in the entertainment transportation industry all while making me a better professional truck driver.Sharky88 Thanks this. -
If you have any DIY skills you can build your own apartment sleeper
in 1990 I bought my first conventional, after I wrecked my 9670 international cabover
it had a 36 inch flat top sleeper ,
I managed to build a shower and a portable toilet in it .
The shower was recessed in between the frame rails so I could stand up in it .
I found a catalog of gas tanks for all kinds of boats , and was able to find tanks for hot and cold and grey water that fit in the available space on the rig .
the hot water was heated with a heater core I dropped into a 8 gallon tank that I mounted under the sleeper outside the frame rails . Cold water tank was on the opposite side .
Had a 12 volt pump in each tank and a blend valve just like is in a residential shower .
had an upholstery place make
Me a mattress in three sections , so I could Slide the center section aside , and then fold the plywood up.
and this was in a sleeper that was separate from the cab , a sit in, not a walk in , with the rubber boot all the way around .
Remember those ?
I never did any cooking , I had the Kool-a-tron , the first electric cooler , that was $350 in 1990 dollars. I’d eat English muffin with peanut butter and a sliced banana on it for breakfast, a sandwich I made from the deli meat and cheese in the cooler , and I’d usually stop someplace and get a hot meal for dinner .
This was back when all the truck stops still had a nice restaurant, but also before , instapots and lightweight microwaves and tons of microwave food available at the grocery store .
if I was still trucking, I could make a shower in the new 84 inch stand up sleepers very easy .
might even build a slide out from an RV into the back wall so you could extend the sleeper when parked for a while .
or build the bunk over the cab, like all the slide in pickup campers .
That would leave the entire area of the normal sleeper for the living room / kitchen .kylefitzy Thanks this. -
