Is this a real thing? From time to time I've read on TTR that a O/O can buy the decals and do his own annual safety. Since every state/province has different inspection criteria, whose rules do you follow? Where do you get the decals?
Self annual inspection on your truck?

You need to be a licensed inspector in BC if not the rest of Canada as well. Not as easy up here

No not at all, they sell where you buy the paper log books and other accessories. Last time I bought one was out of the Love's.Last edited: Feb 23, 2025

My buddy just got his inspection license in BC. IIRC he had to attend a short course on how to perform inspections as well as all the criteria and rules. The shop also needs to be an authorized inspection facility.
Alberta is a bit more lax. IIRC all you need is to submit a clean background check and copies of your Journeyman certificates for Truck/Transport Mechanic. The shop still needs to be a certified shop though. Can't just go around inspecting trucks in your backyard.
Edit: happened to be texting with said buddy. It's a weekend course he had to take to be authorized to perform inspections.Last edited: Feb 23, 2025

By law I believe we're supposed to pull the wheels at inspection time and measure drums and check cam bushing play. Stuff like that. It's not a roll under the truck for 10 minutes and slap a sticker on it kinda thing. I'll know for sure soon, I plan on applying for my inspection license shortly.
Albertaflatbed, Oxbow, Big Road Skateboard and 4 others Thank this. -
this is the procedure in ON also, BUT...I am free to have my annual done outside of ontario so if I do my self inspection in a different jurisdiction do i follow local rules? it'd kinda crazy lolOxbow and Rideandrepair Thank this.

So are you following Canada standards? In the states, you can get away with just slapping a sticker on the side of the truck without the DOT really asking questions. Is it different north of the border?Rideandrepair and rank Thank this.
