I have been thinking about running linehaul Saturday morning. Just curious does anyone know how this works do I set up with my manager? Or just call central dispatch? I work for O.D and I know I can ask my manager and get the answers but it's on my mind right now that's why I posted here. Is it first come first serve? Is there always freight to be moved?

If you are taking loaded trailers there should be a manifest and bills ready for you. Just hook up enter you equipment and depart. If going to a smaller terminal if no paperwork at dispatch u are probably taking empties back. This should be discussed before hand if going to a larger terminal that has dispatch on the weekends they will assign you loads or tell you hook and empty set

This post bring back memories of LTL weekend work!! Years ago worked at Dayton Freight Lines, the first few years I was there, the ‘Linehaul dispatcher’ would always setup the City guys that volunteered for weekends to do their run during the day, and any linehaul driver that volunteered for weekends to do their run at night.
We would ask about that, and his response was; “Linehaul drivers are accustomed to driving nights, I don’t want them to enjoy driving during the daytime”. -

Depends, we are "short handed" but also "overstaffed" at our yard. Not sure how other companies do it but various job titles go in order for seniority. Most guys don't want to work 6 days a week so it is really just whoever volunteers. If anyone. Otherwise an outside contractor comes and pulls a pair of pups wherever unless it is guaranteed freight, then the lowest P&D guy or Dock/Driver gets forced to do it.
But for us we usually just call nearby terminals that have a dispatcher if we want a run. Like calling the portland or seattle office and asking if they have any line runs an hour or two before we are available.
Ask the terminal manager. -
