I had a guy melt his battery in front of me once. Was early 80s and the truck I was driving was around a 70 or 71 White. It had a POSITIVE ground. I told the guy that 4 times. He hooked it up as negative ground and just melted down his positive battery terminal. The truck fired up and I got the hell out of Dodge before he could say anything to me.

I think it might be a military thing. My dad was a wheeled vehicle mechanic/wrecker operator back in the Guard in the 60’s. He taught me to pull the negative first and when I went in I had a different MOS, but we had a lot of small Diesel engines as part of our job and were taught the same thing in the late 80’s. Neighbor of mine was a long time company wrench and was helping me one day and saw me do it the way I was taught, negative first and jumped my crap about it. Just a thoughtblairandgretchen, Dale thompson, IH9300SBA and 10 others Thank this.

The part about if you remove the negative first then tools won’t short if they touch the fender is what got me. That’s verbatim to AI and it’s incorrect. If the battery has juice and you touch that hot terminal with a wrench that’s touching bare metal that touching the engine, you sure as #### will get sparks. With or without the ground cable hooked up.blairandgretchen, Dale thompson, IH9300SBA and 12 others Thank this.

Funny you mention that as not too long after my neighbor jumped me my dad was working on one of his vehicles and touched a fender (now this was 15-20 years ago) on I think was a 84 Bronco with not the socket but the wrist watch on the same arm holding the socket touching the positive bit and blew said watch band right off his wrist! Watch still worked but needed a new flex band. He wore that watch on the other arm for a few weeks while the burn on the other one healed.

I told him what me neighbor had done and he said I had great timing as it was two weeks after the exploding watch flex band affair! I thought it was very funny, he did notDale thompson, IH9300SBA, Oxbow and 9 others Thank this. -
