DOTD announces $17.9M project to repair a section of I-20 in Lincoln Parish.
Long term road work project officially started today 3/31/25 and will be in effect until sometime in 2026 depending on weather.
Location of the road work will involve about nine (9) miles between the Bienville Parish line at about MM 72 through MM 81 at the Grambling State University exit.
This will involve both east & west bound traffic, one lane closure at a time. They will be removing & replacing the the asphalt, first one lane in both directions, then the other lane in both directions. I-20 in this area will be down to one lane in each direction for nine (9) miles.
This is going to be a nightmare. Hwy 80 will be an alternate route but will probably be just about as bad because it is a standard two (2) lane road... one lane in each direction. There is sure to be accidents, especially in the beginning. You will need to plan for long back-ups once this project gets underway. They just put out cones on the edge of the grass/asphalt shoulder and no equipment has arrived as of noon today.
Just a heads up for your plans. I do not know when equipment will begin to show up, but today 3/31/25 was the official start of the project. DOTD did have trucks out there today getting prep work started.

Unless they're going to be digging up and replacing old pipes under the roadbed, or rebuilding bridges, there's no reason it should take them over a year to do just 9 miles' worth of recycling, roadbed stabilization, and paving.

According to the DOTD link I provided, drainage etc will be part of the project. So yes, this will be more than just asphalt replacement.

I suppose the expression no pain no gain fits here. But in general we always see construction but rarely long stretch of smooth road.
Is that inevitable or the industry has figured out how to game the system? Why can't we have more durable roads?
Reminds of about 30 years ago when the CT casinos were waiting on state of CT for highway projects. At one point the casinos said enough, we are taking over.
They got the work done faster for less cost and better results.Flat Earth Trucker and Lav-25 Thank this. -
Just an update on this. Yesterday morning, I went through west bound and it was already down to one lane.
Later in the day, I came back through east bound and its down to one lane with about a 2 mile backup.
Only two days into the roadwork and its down to one lane in both directions... with a backup.
To give a heads up, the right lane in both directions are closed. The left lane in both directions are open. This gives everyone here ample opportunity to know which lane to be in, to prevent serious backups.
Personally, I'd appreciate everyone getting in the right lanes as soon as possible.
At this point, as of yesterday, only about 1/2 of the total construction area is an active work zone. So, currently, about 4 1/2 miles in each direction is an active work zone. Plus the backup, which yesterday, was a couple of miles. It'll get worse n doubt.Flat Earth Trucker, TheLoadOut and 88 Alpha Thank this. -

Never understood lenthy road construction other than its job security for them. When it takes 5yrs to do what could be done in 5 months. It just passes me off. I've seen construction projects in H-town that took so long. That by the time they were done. That extra lane or etc, didn't solve anything. Because tons more ppl moved to the area before they got it done.
I've seen a stretch of 20 in bama( Oxford back east to ga line).be declared a construction zone for at least half of my trucking career. I've seen construction workers moving so slow and nonchalantly during the I-10 bridge construction after Katrina. Till I refused to go to N.O. and quit because of it. Im not trying to be political. But I wish DOGE would stop federal funding to these road projects. If It cant be completed in a reasonable time!!! In other countries construction is done overnight or maybe 1 month.

Saw a documentary maybe 2 yrs ago about I-69. That interstate has been the only interstate to be under construction that long and still not be finished. I would imagine if U.S. construction companies were involved. The Great Wall of China or other big projects around the world. Would still be under construction after all this time!!!Last edited: Apr 4, 2025
