2021 Pete x15 Cummins Back in November 2024 I changed my oil from mobile one extreme full synthetic 15w-40 to a 5w-40 I was running in Va,nc,sc,Ky when it got down in the temperatures 5-8 degrees but all the same brand but had to buy the oil in like three different stores my motor to date has 446,300 all my samples been normal until I done this I only ran like 14,000 with the 5w-40 and came home done a over head, new balancer, and oil change so I just got my reading back and shows the 5w-40 has high oxidation levels for the miles I had on it 14,000 so could it been where I am in Ky that oil sat on the shelves to long or something else
My oxidation levels up in my oil sample

Oil when opened is good for about 2 years. When unopened and not exposed to extreme temps (say in a shed exposed to freezing temps or summer heat) it is about 5 years. One thing that can happen is that the additives separate. I recently did a lot of reading on this. One source is Lake Speed aka The Motor Oil Geek who did a you tube video on the shelf life of oil.

Yes I was idling most days I ran mostly at nights when it was colder and idled more in the day time with it bumped up to around 800-900 rpm but I had feel asleep a couple times with me waking up and fan not kicked in and truck temp would be 210-215 but yes I was setting more than my 10 hr breaks but nothing changed more than I normally had been for the last 6-8 months the only thing changed was the oil

They use alot of road salt in areas you run? If so fine dust will make samples come back abnormal. Change air cleaners and re sample oil when next due

I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues into the warmer months.
