PLEASE HELP!!! 2004 Freightliner Columbia with a Detroit 60 series the truck has 1.5 million miles. When I crank the truck it won’t turn over unless I put a little starter fluid in it, then it’ll idle fine for a few minutes. After that it’ll start to randomly stumble then shut off. I’ll go to immediately crank it back up and it won’t start unless starter fluid is applied. Any advice is greatly appreciated thanks.

Using a pry bar behind the harmonic balancer, see how much play forward, and then back, you have on the crank.

If that's good, I'd check the bull gear to verify it has no play in it.

    Any other symptoms? Smoke?

Hi Big Road. My Columbia is now sitting in the yard because it has the same problem. I was rolling up I-15 in Utah back in November when I noticed a lot of smoke coming out of my stacks. A LOT of dark smoke. There was a loss of power too. So, I stopped overnight at the Love's in Fillmore. The next day she wouldn't start. I'm thinking a fuel issue. So, I left it to a local shop across the highway from the Love's that had great reviews on Google. He said it could take a couple of days, or it could take a couple of weeks! I was under a load, so I left the truck and schlepped on up to SLC and rented a Penske Cascadia for a month. I then returned to Fillmore to pick up the trailer and headed to Denver.

I got back to Fillmore a month later and he had replaced 3 sensors and the fuel back-flow valve of some sort. He said the fuel was (or wasn't, I don't remember) backflowing, so he replaced it. That sucker was pretty expensive considering it looked like a run-of-mill brass plumbing fitting of some sort. Anyway, the truck started fine, and I started rolling back home to Vegas. About 60 miles down the road in Beaver, UT, she started blowing smoke again. I noticed that I had to rev really high to change gears. I also heard a strong rattling coming from what I thought at the time was the gear box. So, I got off the highway at the Flying J exit. She shut off on me when I stopped at the bottom of the off-ramp to make the right turn. I started her up and parked at the Flying J. (I was very lucky because the truck has never started since.) At the Flying J parking lot, I kept her running and popped the hood to see where the rattling was coming from. It turns out it was coming from the left side, in or near the manifold.

Any ideas? Injectors maybe? I got her started in Vegas by shooting lighter fluid into the air intake, but she would shut off a few minutes later. This is the first time she has broken down on me. She has been a reliable beast, so I can't really complain.

I'm having the exact same issue with my 2009 Columbia. This is the first time she has broken down on me (besides the clutch linkage, but that was minor). She has been a reliable beast, so I can't really complain.
