Meritor sealed hub. Can the bearings be replaced?

I had the same problem with my 99 freightliner.
I replaced the entire axle.

 

What??? My 99 had the grease type steer hubs. They can be serviced.

 

Pretty sure you can snug it up "against recommendation"

You can replace the bearings. I would remove the cone and adjust the bearings normally.

One thing, the part #'s on the bearings in your hub may actually be unavailable, but they can be replaced with standard bearings and races, without the cone.

 

Yep this was the only one of the 3 99FLD's I owned, that had the sealed hub. With 1 hub going bad. The other probably was not far behind.
I chose to replace entire axle with new hubs, races and bearings. King pins were good. Took to alignment shop. All was good to go.

That fix was quicker than ordering and waiting for a new sealed hub. I was told the Hub needed was not an off the shelf item. I would have to wait for a production run to get.

 

Nice to have all that new.

 

Those hubs are not the same as current preset style bearings with the inner cone spacer. This original generation is not serviceable and the hub needs to be replaced.

 

I have never seen a hub of that style before. Thanks for posting. Anybody know if all the axes listed in that bulletin used that style hub?
