I tried the magnetic holder. Apparently not that strong. After driving across Arizona, it shook off

 

engine compartment is bad if your hood needs to be released from inside the cab.

 

I use the same hiding place. To find with a flashlight and screw driver.

I put key in fuel tank.
Yep, screw driver is to poke hole in tank. Flashlight, is to look for it.
This information won't help you, because only I know which tank.

All the 20 Freightliners in our yard were keyed alike except for mine and one other..our keys ONLY worked on our 2 trucks..Always a spare under the hood…this after driving a COE that a few times would lock upon exiting truck…
i could take the view window on passenger door in a minute with pocket knife…few trucks have that little window anymore

 

actually YES, yes i have..this one time a Werner driver locked himself INSIDE his truck and could not get out.

i told him to call 911, sure enough a fire rescue team came, used the jaws of life, to get him out.

 

Dang, I'm getting old. Can't believe no one has brought it up. I don't remnant which brands now, but several auto manufacturers had their doors set up to unlock when the door closed... But if you held the handle, they would stay locked! Haven't ever driven a truck that needs the key to lock, so not sure if that works on them.

Be careful of keys under the hood, there's a lot more air movement than you think, and the key bumping on stuff will smooth it out where it won't work. Found this out the hard way.
Magnetic key holders on the inside of the frame are your best bet. But not in any easy to reach/see places. Thieves will check those spots.

I miss wing windows. Always kept a bungee somewhere, took longer to shape those hooks on the step holes than it did to open the wings, even those with push locks.


I am admittedly entirely too good at getting in locked cars for an honest man. Square-body Chevys? Over 15 seconds with a coathanger was a bad day. Carhauling has honed that skillset, and I have better tools, too.

 

I remove the boot off the intake side of the turbo and duct tape a key inside it. Nobody will ever find it there!
