    Well, thats a start...

As a W2 employee, they also HAVE to pay you medical insurance (maybe not 100% but most pay 50-75%). Depending on your situation that is another 6k to 18k a year depending on where you get the insurance through, how many dependents, ect. Not counting dental, life, eye glasses...

Then there is vacation pay that you arent getting.

    PTO.

    Per diem.

There is a lot more. You are probably making .55 a mile when you boil all this down.

Then there is the real pay. Im guessing you get paid for loaded book miles. There are companies that pay practical miles, there are companies that pay ALL miles. There are companies that pay ALL PRACTICAL miles....

Layover pay when they cant get you loads. Detention pay. Ect, so on and so forth. the list is endless.

And I was making .71 a mile 10 years ago at Estes (and they got 2 yards in so Chicago). No idea what they pay now. Trust me, you are NOT getting a bargin...

As @FullMetalJacket said, you need to be talking to a tax accountant.

I get paid most of those things. The only thing I do not get is medical, which I never bothered with before, I have not seen a doctor since I was a child, outside of the dot physical every two years. Everyone these days assumes that we have to get sick when we get old, doctors really hate when folks eat healthy instead of paying them their life savings for prescription drugs. Or periderm, which my last company wanted to charge me four cents per mile to receive.

1099 is not for everyone, but it works great for me.

"As a W2 employee, they also HAVE to pay you medical insurance " ... if they have more than 50 employees

True. Ive been in this business over 40 years. Worked for over 30 different outfits before I bought my own truck. Even the small "mom and pop" outfits Ive worked for have more than 50 employees... Never worked for one that didnt. I suspect even these eastern European 1099s out of Chicago between drivers, mechanics, and office staff have >49 people. An assumption on my part.

When i was 1099 i deducted way more than the standard. #### per diem nearly beat the standard since i was on the road all the time.

If you are 1099 you claim per diem at the end of the year like we all use to.

Companies can do per diem with W2 employees to lower the taxable income. 1099 can deduct the meal allowance for days on the road. 2 different things.

1099 is the way to go. I,m 58 hv exp going back to the 70,s that’s farming . But 80,s to late 90,s I worked for the biggest pipeline company in America with dozens of divisions. Trained by a lieutenant colonel of the state police & in chariot the world’s strongest horizontal drill rig trk line to make extra money . I was in 3 unions but they didn’t pay union wages , so u do more to make more. I drove a 1901 Mack that was in ww1 to Super Liner v8,s. & a trk from every decade to now. I worked for ovr 50 co.s 1099 is the way to go. No trk payment , maintenance etc straight cash check basically like bailing hay in the 70,s. I did 1099 the last 5 yrs I,m paid .80 on hub miles 50 a stop or a flat rate if no miles on the ld . But I might b leaving & going w2 again loads r close to as bad as nyc city work 38 hrs straight in a tanker that paid 34 an hr in 04. You claim days out, occ , tablet deduction, 1/2 of phone, storage unit , motel , rental cars , uber, all cloths, boots , all supplies glass cleaner , oil , 24.50 laundry a week, parking a few extra might get written up. Your health insurance even though u won’t pay much. I pay 41.60 a month. Ever hear of kinkos ? Buy receipt books parking, truck washes , wheel polish jobs, oil , parts for 95 Chevy van or Hinson clutch basket for cr125 . Basically anything I buy turns into supplies or truck related expenses. You want to bring your profit down to around 22,23k to get cheap health care insurance . Fed & state tax is nothing on 22k the 15% for ss & Medicare stings. 1099 EU Chicago jobs r the toughest now usually u pound the ne hard . Yrs ago everybody ran illegal 20-38 hrs where the norm in a tanker ne inner city to Chicago but the equipment was great. 1099,s r junk keep an eye on wrong parts used etc. I m 2 1/2 inches shorter from the 1st 2 yrs that ya beating . Most are not running 3 14 hr shifts in a row because the lack of freight. Keep a easy to understand log of what they ripped u off on . For when you take them to court big money tho yo hire a attorney. Forget the iL. Labor dept there paid off . I took 2 co.s to there court 40k in 4 1/2 months stolen money & 23k on another co. The labor dept in Chicago is paid off . I stated that I was trained by the colonel, boss at the biggest pipeline co the America actually the world , paid 50 million to organized crime to end a huge strike in 94 to get our hhg rig out of the Phily airport to start a world record project 1of 5 in the area. And weekly meetings & payments of 250k a week . Projects where 700 million each . Your supposed to get 3x your money owed interest , penalties from 4 + yrs adds up. I can’t believe I got smoked in court . But it’s not ovr the interest is still building. I can take them to Tribal court for 100 bucks on the Reservation also but I,m only a 1/8 th & the wage theft didn’t happen on the Res so there not in a big hurry to help even though I speak there language. I worked for 11 Chicago 1099,s. All but my current 1 r crooks . Tell your co to reimburse u on Zelle to your non buisness account. No reason u should hv 18 straps for a ld , oil etc mixed in with your gross wages . W2 jobs pay nothing & wotc tax credit employees r the priority military being 1&2 then minorities etc. there’s 82 yr olds living in sleeper trucks . I didn’t plan on being 1 of them . But it didn’t work out too many injuries u get the cc paid off & 30k saved then injuries drain it . Then u start ovr . 1st week of June I,m driving part time & do tree trimming on my own established co.s day rate is 3,200-5k a day. I,ll look for smaller jobs that they don’t want . Stuck in Louisiana now lack of freight. I text 2 pals 1 with ch Robinson & Schneider in a pickle to get out of area . I can b in the ne & there’s 4 loads . 1099 u hv to look at what u made each day then what you spent . I would not suggest going the 1099 route do to the Nasty equipment . Hundreds of injection the last 4 yrs . It’s more physical than a 130 lb jackhammer building trades usually is a 90 lb . With Naitive American a hvy wt boxer next to me in 4 hrs where a 1/2 in deep in the concrete. He did a Tyson under card fight & wanted to fight Mike . Tyson,s management said No way you fighting him . I did that rt after the hhg drill rig job . That was tough too marines quit every week usually the 1st 3 days .
