But but but Jim, that’s just a little hill unlike out west.
Well, little tidbit of information, it’s not the size of the mountain you’re going down, it’s how you approach it.
RIP hands…. -
a lot of drivers nowadays are not properly trained… In many cases you have an inexperienced driver that is a trainer for a lot of these companies and that should not be happeningmjd4277, Oxbow, exhausted379 and 4 others Thank this.

You are 100% correct about how you approach a mountain.
Scariest hill I ever encountered was in southern Pennsylvania, maybe 220, and my rookie butt made a miscalculation and I was gaining speed too quickly.
The crest just dropped off sharply into a steep descent and I was rolling quickly toward the town square. Fortunately, my brakes were in good working order and I could slow down quickly.
It's safe to say I wasn't expecting such a steep decline on such a road, but there it was.mjd4277, Oxbow, exhausted379 and 5 others Thank this. -
PA has some REAL nasty hills. I personally like running a lot of state and US highways around that place, just to avoid the turdpike. One of my favorites is restricted now. I have to deadhead from the Harrisburg area up to MClure PA quite a bit. I used to like running US22 to PA333 and PA235 US522. Then from McClure west via US522 and 22 to State College, then US322 to I-80 via PA970. There are several places along that route that have truck speed limits of 15-25 mph because of a 14-18% grade right into a town. Good times.

It irks me when some left coast guy compares his mountains to the Appalachians. All mountains are equally as dangerous when they aren't respected.

I never understood those Colorado folks that brag about "their" mountains as if they stacked the rocks PERSONALLY. I made one dude mad when he was going on and on about REAL mountains, and pointing out the little hills in CA. I pointed out how Cajon Pass has a longer, steeper climb than either Vail Pass or Running up to the tunnels. And that CA also has the highest and lowest points in the continental US, and you can almost see one from the other. I tried to impress upon him to not dismiss ANY hill you aren't familiar with, because gravity will make you look dumb.
To prove a point, we had to take a 46k load from Calabasas and Barstow (2 stop p/u) to Phoenix. I had him pick the route... he picked CA 247 to CA62 to I-10 at Palm Springs. He also almost missed the turn at Lucerne Valley, and took us up CA18 to Big Bear. I told him, if you were by yourself, you would have had a BAD time in about 30 minutes.mjd4277, D.Tibbitt, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 3 others Thank this. -
Don’t forget the Ozark mountains. They’ve had their Daredevils too.
