We did the same. Managed to take a few vacations along the way. Disney World on a budget. Went 2 years in a row. Bought an annual pass, and went again before it expired, on a real tight budget. I was referring to what I paid in 1994, $75,611 Spent $20k on renovations Sold it in 2002 for $163,000. Today it’s worth roughly $270,000. Current home bought in 2012 for $112,000 spent $15k so far, will probably spend another $15k before selling it. It’s valued at $300.00 today. Both were foreclosures. Did it on 1 income, while working long hours. It wasn’t easy, but it was possible. I believe if someone’s willing to work harder than the average person, they should see the results of their efforts.
Rates are crashing and fuel to the moon!

I’m a LOT country and a LOT redneck. While I appreciate you serving in the military. It ain’t got #### to do with the price of rice in china. Sisters sharing clothes ain’t hand me downs. Neither is a grown son wearing his daddy’s clothes. And well yeah, my name is on my door too. I may not be third generation but I’m second. I have a great wife and great kids and love the lord too, but I’m not coming on here acting like I don’t understand why people would want a nice car or house or to go out to dinner.
It’s easy to live your lifestyle when it’s a choice. It’s completely different when it’s all you can afford.
All I’m saying is maybe take a step back. What you choose works for you, but other people make other choices. And it’s not always the reason you think it is. And that’s OK. If they choose to live in NYC then that’s great! Wouldn’t be my choice, but they aren’t me and I ain’t them.
Just don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining with the whole “we’re proud to wear hand me downs”. And the whole were poor but we’ve got love. You ain’t got no clue about poor.Vega95, gentleroger, DUNE-T and 4 others Thank this. -

My grandpa was a slave in a concentration camp as a child. I am only here because he was liberated by the US Army. I grew up spending time learning why he was the broken man he was. Spent summers and weekends over at the grand parents. No shower, no hot water, no car, but electricity. Grandma got a phone a few years before her death. A landline. We had it better than grandparents. Dad was a soldier. So we had hot water, and barracks style apartments to live in. I know poor. I spent time living in the pacific islands, been to Africa, Middle East, and even lived in”out in town” in Afghanistan when I did work after the military. It’s not a competition who is the poorest. I was trying to get out living beyond ones means. Doing that can really cause a lot of harm. Sure I could do a lot of good as well, but usually it’s just temporary. Things are stupid expensive these days. When they are, that is when you must buckle down and tighten the belt. if you’re living paycheck to paycheck and you don’t have money saved because you’re living beyond your means, It can put you in a lot of trouble. we see it every day with own operators that buy a truck and don’t really have the money to buy a truck and run it. if I want to Starbucks every day, flashy car, or grubhub I’d probably would be struggling.CAXPT, Truckermania and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Pretty big difference in being isolated in the middle of nowhere and living in a small town and commuting to work. Within a 65 mile of circle of where I am you have good jobs in Hastings, Grand Island, Columbus, and Lincoln. It’s a whole 20 minute drive to the closest Walmart.
You could live in any of those towns and pay inflated rent and real estate prices, or you could choose from about 20 small towns in the area and easily cut half or better off your housing costs.
As far as not being able to move, I get that it is a reality for many. It’s hard to save money when they don’t even make enough to cover their lifestyle. But I’d bet if they were determined to change their life and were tired of being broke they could make it happen.CAXPT, Gatordude, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
I can’t hire farm workers for $20 an hour, and I’ve been trying for two years. It’s a mess.
