Personally we had that, with the exception of vacations and traditional summer camps. My sisters didn’t play sports but my brother and I were both able to go to basketball camps for a week in the summer. The vacation deal was probably more due to the nature of dad’s work and not so much due to finances. When the farmers are busy dad and grandpa couldn’t leave them hanging in the summer. The number of trucks who were allowed to haul out of our county were limited so if one truck was gone for a couple weeks that just meant everyone fell behind.

I was a kid so I have zero idea what the finances actually were or how everything was pulled off but I remember we got a new house in early 1980 and dad got a new truck in the fall of 1980. Maybe we had debt up to our eyeballs and dad just worked to cover the payments, I don’t know. I remember we got our first VCR in the mid-80’s and it was $700 or so. But grandpa bought that for us when he won $5000 on a scratch ticket at the truckstop. Lol

Am I so poor that my kids had to file bankruptcy at birth? No.

Am I rich where I can say having money is fun like Ruthless Schwab? Not yet.

However, I can walk into a Loves and get a slice of Godfathers Pizza without taking out a cash advance.

The look of respect I get from other drivers is worth more than anything.

It's happens. You might gets those who say they never had a problems with any load they delivered but most are FOS. Yesterday, a well known broker had multiple loads going east for Monday that I was trying to lineup but 3 different ones from the same brokerage couldn't establish the rate con through email. It is what it is an regardless, I ended up with a better load literally up the street from my location for more money. It's a part of the business.

Lol my mom and dad didn't get a until the early 2000's. We weren't poor though, we had a pool could about do anything, took more trips then anyone I knew. We didn't live in a food desert, it used to be a very.productive farming area people live In the city surrounded by millions of people with in twenty minutes of them and then complain about food prices always blows my mind. Point blank the powers that be do not want people living out in the country, it's part of the climate scam, they want to consolidate everyone into 15 minute cities and make it so you will never travel outside of the city for anything. It's just like the recent health scam, 95% of people fell hook line and sinker for the scam, they are falling for this one to. You will all eat the bugs and be happy, I am going to hunt and fish for the rest of my life I could care less what they want... Speaking of I have to get my bow out of storage today and start shooting, got some new hunting areas I want to try out for now season, you guys have fun eating your bugs.

I imagine we had the highest quality food. Raised, killed or caught a most of the meat. Grew, canned or froze most of the fruits and vegetables. You’ve not had good until you’ve ate a peach, pear, apple, fig or persimmon straight from the tree. And a fresh tomato from the garden in the best part of summer.

So while we didn’t have A/C we had the best food.

My sister and I grew up extremely comfortable and I have great memories of my childhood. We each had our own bedroom and my parents had a window unit in their bedroom with the door closed. We did have one of those high powered attic fans that would suck the heat out of the house before bedtime. I remember in 1976 at 10 years old we got central air and a color tv for the family room on the same day. Went to Florida once a year riding in the back of a station wagon for the 1,000 mile journey. My grandparents were from the Great Depression era and they were much more frugal than my parents. I do know my Dad, who was a tobacco company executive was extremely disappointed when I told him I was going to be a firefighter instead of going to college and becoming an executive like him one day. My Mom who was a high school business and typing teacher was good with anything that made me happy. Everyone doesn’t have to have the same journey in life to be happy and sometimes successful.

You’re still missing the point of the discussion, which is that housing drives wages. I have no problem getting applicants, we are in a hunting and fishing paradise, where something is in season every week of the year. Single guys absolutely LOVE to live here, but they can’t afford to rent, or even dream of buying, because of housing prices; not making $40K a year. Even if they find something, housing is so precarious that they’d have to quit if their lease isn’t renewed because there’s nothing else. It’s easy to say “pay more”, but that doesn’t solve the housing shortage.

Our solution is to build employee housing, which is stupid expensive because of the 40 acre per house zoning rules on top of contractors smoking crack while writing bids, but not as expensive as not having employees.
