I'm starting to tear out the front end to change front cover gasket and went go Peterbilt to pick up gasket kit and they told me that I also need to change a wear bearing when I take off the cover and that I need a special tool and if so where can I get this tool at or Is there another way to change it or do I even have to change it? Thanks

I'd guess the bearing they're talking about is the one on the large gear that runs off the crank gear. You only need to change it if its worn out, that goes for all the gear bearings in the timing case, if they are worn you replaced them but the large gear is the only one you can replace the bearing (you need a press on push the bearing in), the others you have to replace the entire gear assembly as cat doesn't off the bearing separately.
I think the special tool they're talking about is to set the backlash on the cam gear, it helps but its not really necessary to have it, you can set the backlash with feeler gauges is you have to.
Are you doing the timing case to timing gear plate gasket or the timing gear plate to cylinder block gasket?

Well the plate from the timing ate to the block but they sold me the hole front asembly kit. Plus I was gonna stick the cam in while I have all apart. My plan was if the gear wasn't wore I wasn't gonna change it. Thanks alot there jas helps alot. At least in make me feel better about it anyway:biggrin_25521:

Well kinda bummed just went to perterbilt to pick up some parts and started talking to a mechanics and he says I do need a tool to change the front seal and wear bearing as it needs to come off to get to the front cover gasket b the block. No one rents it and cat wants 400 bucks for it plus frieght and it would take them 2 to 3 days to get it and now I would have to wait till Monday. Can I do with out it? I got the front apart and am gonna start to take the front cover off tomorrow. Any body got any tricks or ideas if not guess I gotta wait till Monday :biggrin_2551:

Got me on that one, totally forgot you need a seal installer to put in the front seal. You dont need special tools to pull it apart but you do need one to put the seal in. If you cant borrow the tool, try Monaco Tool Company but there prices usually arent much better. I have seen them installed without the tool but the success rate is pretty low.
    Sorry bout that.
