Friend of mine put a 12.7 outta a fire truck in his W900. I don’t remember the particulars but it wasn’t easy, fun or cheap by time he got it together. I do know the W9 had a 12.7 in it when he began the project. Sounded like a simple deal but wasn’t

Don’t see anything ending in 45. Should end in 60. @benjamin260_6 is an expert on Detroits. Maybe he’ll chime in. Full serial # might help get build date. M code usually means no cooling nozzles. Easy upgrade. PK (1998) has 15:1 pistons. BK (1999) has 16.5:1 pistons, and usually 7650 injectors. They’re 9 hole instead of 6 hole. Finer spray for better atomization. Along with pistons, fixed the white smoke on start up problems that the older ones had after an OH, and the required lonox programming.

Awesome info. Thank you. Mine smokes on startup only in the winter. If I run the block heater, or it’s a warmer winter day, or spring/summer, no smoke at all.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

That’s normal. It’s the cold fuel. My old Cat used to smoke spit fart and hiccup, Lol.

I may be mistaken but some fire trucks ran a higher horsepower but lower torque tune requiring you to drive it at a higher rpm . At least this was the case with a c12 cat I had . It pulled great at 15 to 1700 rpm and kept up easily with our 475 cats BUT it was easy to snuff out on a big grade with a 50,000 lb load.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I didnt do the swap on the 2001 pete.. but i have put a ddec 5 14L into a 2005 pete 379. That was more straight forward as i took a engine out of a century, got the harness reworked for ecm to firewall. This hasRideandrepair and blairandgretchen Thank this.
