    Im a couple days away from taking my HazMat endorsement test. Am planning on getting hired on by a local fuel-company, but i got bored and hopped on a loadboard to look for HazMat loads. Im not currently planning on doing longer-haul (like OTR), but i got curious;
    Where/How does a HazMat trucker and/or HazMat carrier find SafeHaven locations? Is there a site that lists them? Maybe a trucker-map app that shows the SafeHavens? Or would I need to call the FMCSA / PHMSA / county sheriffs?

    What load board are you looking at?

    How did you get access without an operating authority?

    Forgive my ignorance... Is a hazmat load not allowed in truck stops / rest area? I know I've seen a few.

    Was looking into starting up my own trucking-llc; When i created my DAT-account, i put that business-info into the DAT-system and just left the Authority-number blank. Seems like i have limited access to their system (i cant see shipper-/receiver-info, other than pick-up & drop-off cities & occasionally the rate-per-mile).

    I'm a bit ignorant on all this myself, but I think that HazMat loads can park off-street as long as the driver or a co-driver stays within 100ft, and they maintain a clear line-of-sight with the load...also cant park within 300ft of a tunnel and cannot park near open-flames / heat-source

    Thanks. They've loosened their restrictions apparently. They used to deny anyone access unless they were the carrier owner listed on Safer or something proving carrier ownership.

    About your HAZMAT loads; forget about spot freight and see if you can even get (or afford) the 5 million dollar insurance policy first. Non-Hazmat insurance is only 1 million and that's very expensive alone.

    Also, if you can swing the insurance you'll need to find a contracted customer to keep the lights on because load board freight rates are very low. Even hazardous loads are well under what they are before a broker or two take a bite out of them.

    "Safe Haven" is a term for a place for Explosives trucks to park. As long as you don't have class 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 placards, safe haven does not apply to you. Normal Hazmat can park anywhere a regular truck can legally park. But a little bit of common sense can go a long way here. I would never park a placarded tanker in a store lot, like Walmart for instance. And there are a few hotels that don't want hazmat there either.
