The biggest problem is there are more trucks then loads available. So the rates per mile are very low and you have to compete with everyone. How do you get a good driver. You get a bad driver having accidents you will be out of business and bankrupt of someone get killed. Look at the Amazon drivers wrecking lately.
Then you have truck repairs and the downtime for the repairs. These new emissions trucks are crazy expensive to repair and you can be wait a couple days to even get truck into shop to repair it. That’s how back today’s trucks are compared to older pre emissions trucks we used to have that could go 1 million miles without a major repair.Rideandrepair and broke down plumber Thank this. -

Run Forest, Run!
The current marketplace is full of established companies going out of business.
Companies that were established, funded and held an established customer base are having trouble staying liquid when they knew what they were doing -or- so they thought.
Post Covid's mass rush to feed the huge 'at home' market has bloated the carrier base that has not downsized to today's slowed economy depressing rates as the desperate take anything offered thinking that's trucking, it is not!
Despite the tariff based push; more 'at home' manufacturing will take years, if ever, to make things more in balance as the next administration could derail anything established by the current president.
OP may have good intentions but without knowledge, a solid business plan [think semi-captive steady revenue producing customer(s)] is subject to be one of the 90% of new truck owners that goes 'out of business' within the first year.
Frankly OP has better odds going to a casino and placing all his money on double zero at the Roulette table.
Plenty of reasons have been listed above and should be enough to change OP's mind about trucking..Gearjammin' Penguin, NightWind, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
I think it’s a great idea. I plan on designing video games. I’m not a gamer, not very technologically inclined. I’ll learn as I go. Seems easy enough. Willing to sacrifice my highly profitable 1 Truck company at a bargain price. $40k takes everything. Go for it. Follow your dreams.

You won't get financing since you are as green as they come. Question..... How old are you ? Family to support ? Financial situation ? Can you afford to drop your bank account to minus 50K ? If you're single and have a good business head on your shoulders and can in reality afford to lose alot of$$$, go for it. You will get some good experience if nothing else. I've said this before, some guys can drive a truck, but have no business sense, and some have good business sense but couldn't drive a truck 50 feet in a parking lot. If you go for it, and fail, you won't be the first.

You might want to spec a truck for MPG since diesel is usually your biggest expense but that not so easy unless you know how to do it and run the truck at the speed or RMP. You can look for Joel Morrow he is getting like 10 MPG out of his special spec Volvo truck. He willing to run slower and spec the truck with the gears to only be turning 800 RPM going down the road. He says the Volvo engine has a bigger bottom block and can take that. Anyone can look or fallow his progress. He can still make money because he gets 10 MPG when maybe some getting 8 or less is struggling. He have that newest Volvo those seem to having lots of trouble with lot of them sitting at dealer waiting for warranty repair.
