I believe if you get a UPS box it will give you a formal address you can use for your license

 

It does not work that way now. Proof of residency is required. Some states allow a PO box to be displayed on the actual card but they won't let it get that far without residency documents.

 

All I had to do is get new fingerprints for hazmat endorsement and do the eye exam at the DMV.
All the other stuff transfers.

 

Do whatever you're comfortable with.

 

Definitely stop throwing away rent money if you're really not going home!

 

I know this will sound odd, but homeless shelters often help people get set up with mailing addresses to use for state ID, government forms and job applications. If you called a few, they might be able to point you in the right direction. Honestly, if you called some RV parks/camp-grounds, they might even rent you the use of an address. Don't be afraid to get creative.
