There were no currents. I checked the charts right after it happened and at the time it happened it was slack tide. No flow through the East River.

Actually the ship itself was built in Spain using old German blueprints from Blohm & Voss.

Yup,it was given to the U.S. as war reparations. Apparently it was won in a lot drawing.

If she was headed out to sea at the time of the collison, how did she get past/under/around the bridge when she was coming into port? Low tide?

They were on the south side of the bridge docked, but when leaving seems to have encountered a mechanical failure which left it running in reverse. But I'm not sure why they didn't get on the wheel and start doing circles or something instead of just leaving it to run into the bridge. It was really cooking when it hit the bridge. Maybe six knots.

I just assumed it was because they figured the bridge was high enough for them to clear it. Kind of like the steering wheel holders who look at a 12 foot bridge and think “naw I got this” before crashing into it.

This story appears to be a truth is stranger than fiction story. There is just so much wrong with a Mexican navy training ship hitting its MASTS on the Brooklyn Bridge. Is the navy part a joke? I thought sailing ships were like for tourists.
