    Greetings fellow carriers/owner operators.

I've been a long time lurker and have finally decided to join.

    A little about me:

    -Trucking for 11 years
-Became a carrier 5 months ago
-Hauling between Canada and the USA

Please forgive me if this question has been asked before but here goes.

As a Canadian trucker, I usually go into the US either empty or with a small load to get across the border. Once I'm in I usually drop off in OH or IN and pick something else up destined somewhere further south. On the way back I can easily get loads that are a straight shot back to Canada.

Can anyone tell me if I'm doing something illegitimate here? Are there any government agencies that would take issue with what I'm doing?

    Thanks for your help!

    Paul

I always thought the cross border stuff was in and out only,..

I don't think it's legal for you to pick up in the USA and deliver in the USA,....

I'm sure you could call the FMCSA and ask them,....

If it is illegal I hope you get caught and get the book thrown at you,..Your taking American jobs,...

How would you like it if Americans were picking up in Canada and delivering in Canada????

Thanks for the reply walleye, I certainly hope I didn't offend anyone here and I am looking to rectify this if my practices are an issue. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Are there any Canadian truckers that can see an issue here?

Like walleye said, you cannot go point to point in the US. You can take a load into the US which has multiple stops. You can also pick up from multiple places coming back into Canada. You cannot pickup in the US to deliver somewhere else in the US. You also cannot shuttle an empty trailer (other than the one you brought from Canada) from one location in the US to another location in the US.

Really though, how can you be a trucker for 11 years, become a Motor Carrier and not know that you can't pick up in the US to take to another location in the US?

When ( and not if ) your papers are inspected by the authorities, you're going to end up in really big trouble ( possibly, revocation of your running rights, huge fine, and / or imprisonment ). What you're doing is an absolute no-no, either by US drivers in Canada, or Canada-based drivers in the US.

If, however, you have dual citizenship, or the legal right to work in both countries, I'm not sure what the ramifications would be. Your best bet would be to consult a NAFTA specialist, or the customs authorities in both countries. I would think that the issue that would then crop up, would be where your company and truck are registered ( just a surmise on my part ).

Regardless, you're currently treading on very dangerous ground.

I don't believe for one minute that you are Canadian.
It's common knowledge among Canadian drivers that "inter stating" is
illegal. If one of them was doing it he wouldn't be stupid enough to talk about it here or anywhere else.
Trying to stir the pot a little bit here Bubba?
