To all you lurkers who are trying to decide if you want to make the leap into trucking.

Decide now !!!

Within the next 6 months, the Fed will throw the switch on CSA. At which time it is estimated that up to a 1/4 million drivers will lose their jobs. Some immediately, others within a few months.

The company I drive for has drawn the lines. A Sis score of 90 will put you on a Do Not Hire list. It will NOT matter how clean your DAC is, it will not matter that you have a clean driving record. Nor will it matter if 20 companies provide you with written letters of reference stating you're the best driver in the world.

While these events may make for a short term shortage of drivers. It will be just that, short term. Over 100,000 drivers lost their jobs in 2009 due to a slow economy. They will move swiftly to fill these positions.

Additionally, driver pay is projected to be an average of $75,000 within 2 years of this event.

While you may view this as a good thing, and it is. It will also effect the number of people joining the industry. Flooding schools, which will in turn increase their prices. Simple supply and demand.

Do you want to wait, and possibly pay $10K for that training. Or do it now for 3-5K ?

You decide....But do it soon.

The pay would be going up as I am at the end of my driving career. I made great money in the 70's, and decent money early in the 2000's. But age, and health concerns, along with other things, such watching my grandchildren grow up, and spending time with my wife while we can enjoy each other, have severely limited my trucking journey.

Trucking is just not the fun it was 35 years ago. I used to look forward to going out. Not so anymore. I may be forced back into a truck, as I was due to a slow economy and finances last year, but I hope not. I hate that I will miss some things, but I am also very glad that I grew up in some of the best times we as Americans, and truckers, have enjoyed.

But at 75-80k a year, I may rethink things.

I've already got my CDL, but have to wait another year minimum before I can start applying. I wonder if there will be any decent jobs left then?

Don't hold your breathe. I'll believe it when I see it.

While I may have posted the information, as given to me. I refuse to believe it until I see it in MY bank account.

The CDL was supposed to have the same effect, as was the new HOS.

So far...SSDD

I know what you are saying Danc. Everything that was supposed to make it better for drivers and increase pay has done the opposite.

If trucking had even kept up with raises in the cost of living with no other raises over the last 20 years, we would average 70k+ now. Some how some way drivers need to earn at least close to what they should eventually. Starting drivers should be over 50k with the current cost of living.
The trucking company's say they are surviving on a slim margin, in our recent economy that was probably true, and some are not out of the hole yet. But remember, they acted like they had a 1% margin when the economy was good.
Allot of it is accounting.
