Not a spouse or friend, just someone that's interesting in the trucking life. Someone that wants to find out what it's really like before committing. Has anyone ever allowed a passenger like this?

    77fib77 and Chinatown Thank this.

Most guys that own their own trucks can do what they want and have riders but company drivers usually cannot in most cases. Wether it be insurance policy or just company policy.

Down here in the dirty south during the summer school break its not uncommon to see owner op’s working a truck everyday with the whole family in the cab. Lol.

I took out my passenger seat. I like working alone, always have. So, no, no riders. Not even my wife

There have been times I’ve taken the whole family along. The boys all like to go, and the wife comments occasionally that it’s about her turn again! I wouldn’t just pick up a random hitchhiker though

Company has asked me a couple times to give another driver a ride home or to recover a truck.

We are also allowed a human or pet passenger. Human we just need to notify safety so they can bill us a trivial amount for liability insurance..

It's been done. Some trucking companies will fire a driver for carrying an unauthorized passenger without prior permission. Insurance company is not looking for more liability. Trucking company is not looking to make the insurance company angry.

    Some companies allow a rider.
Some allow a spouse or family member.
    Some also allow a friend.
Good questions to ask before you accept a job.
You can always say the person is a friend even if he or she is not.

Prior to my retirement, last year, I worked for Crete. They changed their rider policy a few years back allowing any adult, not necessarily related, to ride along (with company permission). You could also take your own children. As far as I know, this is still the policy.
