Been doing both.
I’m a bit frustrated right now because while we were at a family reunion last weekend I paid a shop to put in a front seal, harmonic balancer, dampener, alternator belts, and run the overhead.
It’s a mechanical N-14 with STC, and they did not get the overhead right.
It had a very distinct rattle, especially after using the Jakes. And the Jakes were significantly weaker. I ran it 150 miles, took it back, and they reran the overhead. No difference.
So, I ran it today, let it cool off after I got home, and reran the overhead myself. The injectors were way off. Now it’s an intermittent rattle…
Haven’t tried the jakes to see if they’re back to normal or not.
Stuff like this is why I tell my wife it feels like I have to do everything myself, and it takes me so long to get through my list of stuff to do.
Nothing like paying someone to do something, redoing their work, and it’s worse than when you dropped it off at the shop.

 

Was it hard to bar over after they set them?

 

I would say it was a little harder to bar over than it is now since I reran the overhead myself.

 

Well my #### box is clean at least. Haven't been behind the wheel much lately...tryna do real farm stuff.

 

Now a days mechanical motors are older the the "techs" trying to work on them.

 

Just before I retired in 2015 I was showing a young guy how to find a miss on a Big Cam. I was holding down the injectors one by one while it was running. He looked at me and said "Are you crazy? I'm not doing that" I just shook my head.

 

I have a question for the masses:

The yellow dot on new tires- I have been told to line it up with the valve stem and they will balance better. I have witnessed our local tire store paying attention to that one time, and then the next time a different tire monkey ignores it completely. I had new steers put on today on one of our trucks. One took 4 ounces to balance and the other took 2, and he ignored the yellow dot completely.

Thoughts anyone?

 

Yellow dot indicates the lightest spot in the tire. The valve stem is the heaviest spot in them rim. That’s why you line the two up. The red dot indicates the highest point of a tire. There should be a dot or dimple or a sticker on the rim. Lowest spot on the rim. It aligns with that.

if both dots are present the red dots get priority. Otherwise yellow dots to the valve stem
